Blackburn Rovers won the Premier League in 1994-95, the crowning moment of Jack Walker’s transformation of his hometown club and still the only title of the Premier League era won by a club outside its traditional elite until Leicester City in 2016. Kenny Dalglish’s side finished on 89 points from 42 matches, edging out Manchester United by a single point on a dramatic final day.
It remains one of only two occasions in Premier League history that the title has been won by a club other than the seven-figure regulars of Manchester, London and Merseyside, and it was built on the most famous strike partnership of the 1990s: Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton, the SAS.
How Blackburn Won the 1994-95 Premier League
The foundations were laid three years earlier. Local steel magnate Jack Walker took control of the club in 1991, appointed Kenny Dalglish as manager, and funded promotion to the inaugural Premier League through the 1992 play-offs. A British record £3.5 million brought Alan Shearer from Southampton in the summer of 1992, and after finishing 4th in 1992-93 and 2nd in 1993-94, Walker broke the British record again in July 1994, paying Norwich City £5 million for Chris Sutton.
The partnership delivered immediately. Shearer scored 34 league goals and Sutton added 15, a combined 49 of Blackburn’s 80. Behind them, Tim Flowers kept goal behind a defence marshalled by Colin Hendry and Henning Berg, with Tim Sherwood captaining the side from midfield and Stuart Ripley and Jason Wilcox supplying the wings. Rovers topped the table for most of the season, holding off Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United through a nerve-shredding spring run-in.
The Final Day at Anfield
The title went to the last afternoon of the season, 14 May 1995. Blackburn, two points clear, travelled to Liverpool while Manchester United went to West Ham needing Blackburn to slip and a win of their own. Shearer put Rovers ahead at Anfield, but Liverpool turned it around, Jamie Redknapp curling in a late winner. For a few agonising moments it did not matter what was happening at Upton Park. Then word spread: United had been held 1-1, Ludek Miklosko having produced one of the great goalkeeping performances to deny them. Blackburn had lost 2-1 and won the league, champions of England for the first time since 1914.

What Happened Next
Dalglish moved upstairs to become Director of Football that summer, handing the team to his assistant Ray Harford. The defence of the title was a struggle: Rovers finished 7th in 1995-96 and exited the Champions League at the group stage, and Shearer departed for Newcastle United in July 1996 for a world record £15 million.
