Foxborough, MASS. — Boston Legacy officially entered the National Women’s Soccer League scene with a narrow 1-0 defeat to reigning champions Gotham FC in their inaugural match.

Patches of sunshine flickered over an enthused crowd of 30,207 spectators eager to be part of history. Green was the color du jour in Gillette Stadium, from the throngs of the team’s bright chartreuse jerseys and scarves to the recently installed natural grass field.

Both Boston and Gotham played with similar styles. They each built out of the back and pressed high to win back possession. The game turned into a physical affair that saw 33 fouls and eight yellow cards across both teams. Boston midfielder Bianca St-Georges earned her marching orders after receiving her second yellow in the 77th minute. Legacy outside back Nicki Hernandez could also be seen being helped off the pitch by two staff members after the game.

The Legacy lived up to the spirit of halftime performers New Kids on the Block and hung tough through the first interval. However, around the 57th minute, the hosts committed a sequence of defensive mishaps that began with an errant distribution from goalkeeper Casey Murphy. Lilly Reale, the 2025 NWSL Rookie of the Year and a Massachusetts native, played an inviting ball across the box, and an unfortunate St-Georges touch put the ball in the path of second-half substitute Esther González. The Spanish striker made Boston pay with a well-finished goal.
