Wolverhampton Wanderers snatched a late point after fighting back from two goals down against Brentford.

Brentford squandered a commanding lead, allowing Wolverhampton Wanderers to stage a spirited 2-2 draw at the Gtech Community Stadium. Tolu Arokodare’s equalizer late in the game denied the Bees a crucial victory, leaving the home side frustrated.

The Bees entered the Premier League fixture hoping to strengthen their push for European qualification, sitting in seventh place. In contrast, Wolverhampton Wanderers, positioned at the foot of the table, desperately sought points to escape the relegation zone. The match promised high stakes for both clubs.

Brentford quickly asserted their dominance, creating early chances. Their pressure paid off in the 22nd minute when Michael Kayode fired home the opener. Keane Lewis-Potter delivered a precise assist, setting up Kayode for a clinical finish.

The home side extended their advantage in the 37th minute through Igor Thiago. Dango Ouattara threaded a superb pass, allowing Thiago to slot the ball past the Wolves goalkeeper. Brentford appeared to be in complete control, holding a comfortable two-goal lead.

However, Wolves found a lifeline just before halftime. Adam Armstrong pulled a goal back in the 44th minute, converting Jean-Ricner Bellegarde’s well-placed cross. This goal injected renewed hope into the visitors as the teams headed for the break.

The second half began with Wolverhampton Wanderers showing greater intent. They pushed forward, seeking to capitalize on their late first-half momentum. Substitutions soon followed, changing the dynamic of the game.

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil made a decisive change in the 74th minute, introducing Tolu Arokodare from the bench. This substitution proved immediately impactful, shifting the balance of play.

Just three minutes later, in the 77th minute, Arokodare smashed home the equalizer. João Gomes provided the crucial assist, leaving the home crowd in disbelief. Brentford’s two-goal cushion had completely evaporated.

The final minutes became a frantic battle as both teams chased a winner. The intensity led to a flurry of yellow cards, with several players booked for rough challenges. Despite the late drama, neither side could secure a decisive third goal.

Brentford registered an expected goals (xG) of 2.56, indicating they created numerous scoring opportunities. Wolves, despite their comeback, had a lower xG of 1.33. Wolves edged out Brentford in total shots (13 to 10) and shots on target (4 to 3), while ball possession remained nearly even.

This draw leaves Brentford in seventh place, disappointed to have dropped points from a winning position. For Wolverhampton Wanderers, the single point, though not enough to climb out of 20th, offers a psychological boost in their arduous fight against relegation.
