Burnley 0-2 Arsenal: What Were The Main Talking Points As The Gunners widen Their Buffer At The Top Of The Premier League Table?

Only continuing on what has been a sensational run of form, Arsenal widened their buffer at the top of the Premier League table as they clinched a routine 2-0 victory away at Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

Now almost universally regarded as the standout title contender this season, the Gunners didn’t take long to open the scoring here as big-money summer recruit Viktor Gyokeres fired home after 14 minutes.

Now currently holding a commanding seven-point buffer over the chasing pack, England international Declan Rice doubled Arsenal’s advantage 10 minutes before the break and essentially wrapped thing up before the half-time whistle.

With no side among England’s elite recording more goal from open play so far this season, Mikel Arteta’s camp couldn’t have asked for a more routine afternoon in Lancashire.

As for Burnley, despite failing to claim an iconic Premier League scalp here and making it three top-flight victories on the bounce, Saturday’s hosts will be more than aware that easier tests await down the line.

On an afternoon when Arsenal further underlined their title credentials, we have taken a look at the main talking points from Turf Moor.

Arsenal extend their buffer at the top

While Arsenal might have been forced to settle for another silver medal finish last season as they ended the 2024/25 campaign without a single piece of silverware to show for their troubles, the Gunners knew that they had plenty of pressure on their shoulders this time around.

However, embarking on what has been a sensational run of form and hardly having to get out of third gear here, Arteta’s men are regarded as the standout title contender this season.

Looking to get their hands on a first domestic crown since way back in 2004, Arsenal have now won all of their previous nine consecutive appearances across all competitions.

With the mood around north London at a red-hot high, Arteta’s high-flying squad have continued to shine on either side of October’s international break and they laid down another title marker here.

Arguably the most in-form club from across Europe and suffering just a single defeat across any competition since opening up the new campaign, it remains to be seen if anyone can stop the Gunners this season.

Defensive steel will win Arsenal this season’s title

While former Sporting Lisbon striker Gyokeres might have notched a first Premier League strike since September 13th here, the key part of Arsenal’s success has certainly been their sensational defensive steel.

With William Saliba overcoming a late fitness test and partnering Gabriel at the heart of Arteta’s defence in Lancashire, Saturday’s guests have gained a fearsome reputation for their defensive dominance.

With Burnley not registering a single shot on target here, Arsenal have remarkably shipped just three Premier League goals from their first 10 appearances.

Likewise, comfortably holding the best-defensive tally among England’s elite, the Gunners have also conceded just a single strike from open play across any competition so far this season.

Completely untested on Saturday afternoon, the leading title contenders have also come away unscathed in all of their last seven consecutive outings across all fronts.

Easter tests await for Burnley

While Burnley might have failed to spring an almighty Premier League upset here, Scott Parker’s men will be more than aware that easier tests await down the line.

Snatching what was a sensational last-gasp 3-2 win away at a Wolves squad who find themselves at the heart of a public nightmare, the former Burnley boss has seen his squad gain plenty of plaudits.

Despite only making their top-flight return this season, the Premier League newcomers have taken six points from their previous three appearances.

Marking their return from October’s international break with what could prove to be a season-defining 2-0 victory at home against Leeds, Parker’s side currently hold a four-point buffer over the relegation zone.

Simply glad to see the back of the runaway Premier League leaders, Burnley will be seeking an immediate response next weekend when they travel to fellow relegation candidates West Ham.
