Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen has backed Michael Carrick to become the club’s permanent manager, saying he is surprised the decision is still being debated.
Carrick, who made 464 appearances for United as a player, was appointed caretaker head coach following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim in January.
Since taking charge, the 44-year-old has overseen a strong run of results, winning six of his first eight matches and helping the team climb from sixth to third in the Premier League.
Owen, who played alongside Carrick at Old Trafford between 2009 and 2012, believes the former midfielder has helped restore stability at the club.
“I can’t believe people are questioning whether he should get the job,” Owen said on the latest edition of The Wayne Rooney Show.
“Manchester United have waited about 12 years – they’ve gone for proven, legends, everything since Sir Alex [Ferguson].
“And the one time they are starting to play well, get results, the fans are on board – you’re telling me at the end of the season if he gets third [place] they will say ‘thanks, but no thanks’. How is that possible?”
Rooney joins positive Carrick talk
Wayne Rooney also praised Carrick’s impact, suggesting the caretaker boss has reminded supporters of the club’s successful past.
“Everyone at Manchester United loves Michael Carrick and they are just scared it doesn’t go right. He’s done an unbelievable job,” Rooney said.
Despite the positive results under Carrick, the club are still understood to be assessing other candidates as they search for a permanent manager ahead of next season.
Carrick, however, has strengthened his case with the team’s recent form and their charge towards the Champions League places.
