TCU football coach Sonny Dykes lands blockbuster contract extension

The TCU Horned Frogs got off to a blazing start under head football coach Sonny Dykes.

In 2022, his first season at the helm, Dykes led TCU to the College Football National Championship game. As a result, the Horned Frogs finished 13-2 after the 65-7 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs.

Including that first campaign, Dykes’ teams have the most victories (36) and victories over ranked opponents (eight) of all Big 12 teams. TCU remains the only Big 12 team to win a CFP game.

On Friday, April 3, TCU rewarded Dykes for the program’s success with a multiyear contract extension, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Dykes’ previous contract ran through 2028 and paid him more than $7 million, Thamel reported.

“The opportunity to pursue a national championship, the College Football Playoff, and Big 12 championships exists right here in Fort Worth,” Dykes said in a release from TCU, “and my family and I, as well as our entire staff, are excited to continue that pursuit as Horned Frogs.”

Because TCU is a private university, the terms of Dykes’ extension are not subject to open records requests.

The 2025 Horned Frogs went 9-4, including a middle-of-the-pack 5-4 finish in the Big 12. TCU defeated the USC Trojans, 30-27, in overtime in the Alamo Bowl to earn a No. 25 ranking in the final AP Top 25.

Dykes will look to replace quarterback Josh Hoover, who transferred to Indiana to replace Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza. Analysts expect former Harvard Crimson quarterback Jaden Craig to take over behind center.

TCU also went 9-4 in 2024, defeating Louisiana 34-3 in the New Mexico Bowl. The Horned Frogs struggled to a 5-7 record in 2023, the season after the trip to the CFP title game.

“Competing for national and Big 12 championships requires the right leadership, and Sonny has proven he’s that person,” TCU Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Mike Buddie said in the release. “His track record on the field, his standing in the community, and the decisions he’s made to position this program to pursue those goals speak for themselves.”

Dykes made three previous stops as a head coach. He went 22-15 at Louisiana Tech, 19-30 at California and 30-18 at SMU.
