Carrick Scraps Eight Man Utd Rules After Permanent Job

Michael Carrick has scrapped eight rules at Manchester United and reshaped the club’s training routine after being handed the job permanently, according to the Manchester Evening News and The Mirror on June 30, 2026.

The overhaul targets policies established by his immediate predecessors, Ruben Amorim and Erik ten Hag, as Carrick stamps his own identity on the dressing room and Carrington.

It matters because Carrick earned the role on merit, guiding United to a third-place Premier League finish and a return to Champions League football during a caretaker spell that began in January 2026.

His interim record of 12 wins, four draws and two losses convinced the hierarchy he was the right long-term choice, and he has wasted little time imposing a softer, more player-friendly culture.

Among the most notable changes, Carrick has lifted the dressing room food ban introduced by Amorim, who had blocked food on matchdays to keep a strict focus on fitness levels.

Carrick has reintroduced food to the room to create a more relaxed, welcoming and informal environment, with the aim of making players feel appreciated.

Training has also been restructured, with the day-after recovery sessions demanded by both Amorim and Ten Hag now abolished.

Players are instead given a designated rest day within 24 hours of a match, with recovery work pushed back to two days after the game.

Post-match communication has been reworked too, after Amorim reportedly preferred to send players home without speaking to them and let emotions settle before any debrief the following day.

Taken together, the changes signal a clear break from the demanding regimes of his predecessors as Carrick prioritises a calmer, more man-management-led approach.

The new culture also frames United’s summer business, with the club keen to bring Marcus Rashford back for pre-season under the manager he flourished with.

Attention now turns to how Carrick’s relaxed methods translate into results when United return to Champions League football, with DasFootball tracking every step of his first full campaign.
