Watching the 2026 Champions League draw to the most dramatic of ends on Saturday evening, this season’s tournament has once again flourished with the new format.

As PSG successfully defended their maiden Champions League crown thanks to a nail-biting penalty shootout victory against Arsenal in Budapest, the usual suspects stole plenty of this year’s attention.

While Norwegian outfit Bodo/Glimt might have gained a string of plaudits from across the continent following their record-breaking flurry, it was the expected European giants who received all of the headlines.

PSG join an elite group

Making real history 12 months ago as they got their hands on a long-awaited maiden piece of European silverware, PSG had made it abundantly clear that their sole focus was on defending their Champions League crown this time around.

Cementing their spot as a legitimate European powerhouse as they stormed their way to a record-breaking 5-0 romp against Inter Milan in Munich, Luis Enrique’s superstar squad opened their new adventure with plenty of expectations on their shoulders.

Collecting a heavyweight semi-final scalp as they dragged themselves to a remarkable 6-5 aggregate win against Bayern Munich earlier in the month, PSG have now underlined their status as Europe’s ultimate poster boy.

Arsenal suffer the most public of heartbreak

Officially getting their hands on a first Premier League crown since way back in 2004 just days prior to their trip to Hungary for Saturday’s showpiece event, Arsenal certainly had the mood in their camp at a famous high.

However, throwing away their early lead in Budapest and suffering infamous penalty shootout heartbreak as their wait for a maiden European trophy continues, the Gunners missed out on the chance to underline their status as one of the greatest sides in their illustrious history.

Remarkably not suffering a single defeat within 90 minutes during any stage of their historic European adventure this season, the Gunners eventually fell short in just the 12th Champions League final to be decided by spot kicks.

While the Gunners might have ended their over two-decade wait to get their hands on a Premier League trophy, Saturday’s heartbreak in Budapest will certainly live long in the memory for Arteta’s squad.

Madness at Madrid

Eventually watching their rollercoaster European adventure come to an end following a thrilling 6-4 aggregate defeat against Bayern at the quarter-final stage, Real Madrid find themselves at the heart of a public soap opera.

Remarkably failing to register a top-eight finish during their group stage campaign and forced to go via the play-offs, Los Blancos have faced a real backlash from their supporters and their European exit appeared to be the final nail in Alvaro Arbeloa’s coffin.

Showing some real defensive issues on the European stage and without a single piece of silverware to show for their troubles once again this season, even French superstar Kylian Mbappe couldn’t help the 15-time European champions save any face.

Although the former PSG talisman might be at the heart of what is becoming a real feud with the Madrid fanbase, their leading marksman did claim the 2026 Champions League Golden Boot after bagging 15 goals during this year’s tournament.

Bayern make a real marker

Although Bayern Munich might have eventually fallen short against the back-to-back European champions, Vincent Kompany’s side laid down a major marker and they are certainly relishing life under the former Burnley boss.

Winning seven of their eight group stage appearances and returning from March’s international break regarded as a standout contender by many, the German heavyweights also gained a fearsome reputation for their remarkable free-scoring performances in the final third.

Getting their knockout stage adventure underway with a record-breaking 10-2 aggregate romp against Atalanta, Bayern bagged an astonishing 43 goals during this season’s tournament – a tally that is only bettered by PSG (45).

With England skipper Harry Kane only finishing behind Mbappe in the race for this season’s Champions League Golden Boot, the ex-Tottenham striker is also widely regarded as a standout Ballon d’Or candidate this year.
