Chelsea are beginning to lose confidence in their chance to sign Mike Maignan from AC Milan as they can’t agree on the transfer fee. The Blues remain hopeful that they can finally agree on a deal with the Rossoneri, but time is ticking.
Chelsea Struggle to Strike a Deal With Milan for Maignan
The Blues are keen on snatching Maignan as their main keeper for the new season, but they want him available already for the FIFA Club World Cup. However, the early transfer window for teams participating in the tournament will end on June 10, so they must speed things up.
Chelsea believes that Maignan’s profile suits what Enzo Maresca is looking for, so they are keen on getting him this summer. Knowing that the French keeper has one year left in his contract and hasn’t reached an agreement with Milan for an extension, the Blues aim to pounce.
Maresca’s side were confident that they could get a discount price because of Maignan’s contract situation, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Milan have reportedly been asking for 25 million euros for the French goalie, while Chelsea initially insisted on only paying 10 million euros.
Chelsea Losing Confidence in Striking a Deal for Maignan
The latest reports suggest that both teams are still negotiating, but the Athletic’s Simon Johnson reported that the Blues’ confidence is not that high. There’s still time before the special transfer window for the FIFA Club World Cup participants closes, but things are not looking good for Chelsea.
Milan refuses to budge from their initial request, believing that Maignan’s value is higher than what the Blues are proposing. It remains to be seen whether the Rossoneri and Chelsea will meet halfway, as the Blues do have the keeper’s approval over a transfer.
Nevertheless, the Rossoneri initially still keen on keeping Maignan, so if there’s no deal agreed with Chelsea, Massimiliano Allegri’s side might try to reach an agreement with the keeper once again. Moreover, Milan might also believe that there will be other suitors who would be open to pay the price they requested for the French international goalie in this summer transfer window.
