Newcastle United and Sunderland have confirmed their starting teams for their Premier League meeting at St James’ Park on Sunday.

The fierce rivalry produced a 1-0 win for the Black Cats in the reverse fixture in December and both teams start this edition of the derby in patchy form.

The Magpies have one win in four matches in all competitions following their 7-2 thrashing at Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday, while Sunderland have one victory in their last five, although victory would send them above Newcastle into 11th.

101GreatGoals.com has the line-up news from Newcastle vs Sunderland in the 2025/26 Premier League, as well as details on how to watch.

Newcastle confirmed starting team vs Sunderland

Newcastle bring in Nick Woltemade for Sandrol Tonali after the playmaker suffered a groin injury at Barca. Sven Botman supplants Malick Thiaw in defence in their only other change.

Defender Fabian Schar (ankle) and midfielders Bruno Guimaraes and Lewis Miley (both thigh) are injured.

Newcastle United starting XI: Aaron Ramsdale, Kieran Trippier, Lewis Hall, Sven Botman, Joelinton, Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, Anthony Elanga, Nick Woltemade, Dan Burn, Aaron Ramsey

Newcastle substitutes: Nick Pope, Yoane Wissa, Malick Thiaw, William Osula, Tino Livramento, Jacob Murphy, Joe Willock, Alex Murphy, Leo Neave

Sunderland full line up vs Newcastle United

Sunderland make one change, centre-back Luke O’Nien replacing Dan Ballard, who suffered a hamstring injury in the 1-0 home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion eight days ago.

Goalkeeper Robin Roefs (thigh), centre-back Dan Ballard (hamstring) and wingers Romaine Mundle (hamstring), Bertrand Traore (knee), Nilson Angulo (muscle), and Jocelin Ta Bi (ankle) are sidelined.

Two players who had been doubts are on the bench: right-back Nordi Mukiele had a calf issue and midfielder Enzo Le Fee a muscle problem.

Sunderland starting XI: Melker Ellborg, Lutsharel Geertruida, Luke O’Nien, Omar Alderete, Trai Hume, Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki, Habib Diarra, Chris Rigg, Chemsdine Talbi, Brian Brobbey

Sunderland substitutes: Simon Moore, Reinildo Mandava, Dennis Cirkin, Nordi Mukiele, Enzo Le Fee, Harrison Jones, Jenson Jones, Eliezer Mayenda, Wilson Isidor

Where to watch Newcastle vs Sunderland: TV channel, live online stream

Kick-off on Sunday is at 12:00 GMT (07:00 ET / 04:00 PT), with live coverage in the UK on Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Ultra.

Via Now TV, Sky Sports costs £14.99 for a day membership, £28 a month for a 12-month membership or £34.99 a month with no contract.

Sky Sports memberships include access to all 12 live Sky Sports channels and Sky Sports+, which offers live streams and a dedicated channel.

Newcastle United vs Sunderland stats

Newcastle are winless in their last five home league games against Sunderland (D2 L3), with this their first such meeting at St James’ Park since a 1-1 draw in March 2016

They have one goal in their last six league games against Sunderland. Their last league clean sheet against the Black Cats was in August 2011 with Tim Krul in goal

The reverse fixture had a combined xG of 0.54 (Sunderland 0.30, Newcastle 0.24), which is the second-lowest on record (from 2012/13) in a Premier League game, ahead of only Bournemouth v Burnley in December 2019 (0.30)

With 11 shots, that game (5 Sunderland, 6 Newcastle) had the lowest tally of any Premier League match since the start of 2023/24

The hosts have won both of their Premier League games in March, beating Manchester United 2-1 and Chelsea 1-0. They last had a 100% winning month in the league (minimum 3 games) in November 2018 (3/3)

Anthony Gordon has scored in back-to-back Premier League games and could score in three consecutive appearances for the first time, with his next match his 175th in the top-flight

Eddie Howe could become the first-ever Newcastle manager to lose both of his first two league games against Sunderland

The visitors are unbeaten in their last 10 league games against Newcastle (W7 D3), winning seven of the last eight – the joint-longest run either side has had without defeat in the history of the fixture (Newcastle also 10, between 1985 and 1997)

Having beaten Leeds 1-0 in their last Premier League away game, Sunderland could win consecutive away matches in the division for the first time since May 2014

They last did so without conceding in October 1999

Only Brighton (8 – W3 D5) have avoided defeat in more different Premier League games when conceding the first goal this season than Sunderland (7 – W4 D3), who are also one of three teams not to lose when scoring first this term (W6 D4) along with Manchester United (W12 D6) and Nottingham Forest (W5 D2)

Only Aston Villa (19) have won more points from losing positions than Sunderland (16) in the Premier League this season

Only West Ham (20) have dropped more points from winning positions than Newcastle (19)

Regis Le Bris could become the second Sunderland manager to win both of his first two league Tyne-Wear derbies in charge, after Gus Poyet in 2013/14
