Tottenham Hotspur skipper Cristian Romero appeared to direct criticism at senior figures within the club following Thursday’s 3-2 Premier League defeat away to Bournemouth. The centre-back published a message on Instagram shortly after the match that suggested frustration beyond performances on the pitch.
In the initial version, Romero implied that certain individuals only make public appearances during positive periods and accused them of spreading “lies”. That post was later removed from his account.
A revised statement was then shared, closely resembling the original message but without the reference to dishonesty. Despite the edit, the tone continued to hint at dissatisfaction with those operating above the squad.
Romero stressed accountability among the players, acknowledging responsibility for results while suggesting that others should also address supporters during difficult spells.
Results and fan unrest at Tottenham
Spurs’ struggles have intensified scrutiny, with the North London side recording just one victory from their last six league outings and dropping to 14th place in the table. The setback on the south coast added to a growing sense of unease around the club.
Supporter anger has been evident in recent home fixtures. Fans voiced their displeasure during a scoreless draw at Brentford and again after a 1-1 stalemate with Sunderland, when boos greeted the final whistle.
Tensions were also visible during the Bournemouth match. Micky van de Ven and Palhinha were involved in exchanges with travelling supporters, while Pedro Porro had to be calmed by goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario as an argument threatened to escalate.
Adding to the awkward atmosphere, head coach Thomas Frank was photographed before kickoff holding a coffee cup displaying Arsenal branding.
This is not the first occasion Romero has publicly questioned how Tottenham is managed. The 27-year-old, who has featured 146 times for the club, has previously used social media to express concerns.
When former head coach Ange Postecoglou was dismissed in June, Romero referenced longstanding difficulties within the organisation while posting a farewell message.
Earlier, in December 2024, the Argentina international openly criticised the board, highlighting what he felt was insufficient spending. His latest comments appear to continue that theme, as pressure mounts on and off the field.
