Gianluigi Donnarumma has announced that his time with Paris Saint-Germain is over, delivering an emotional farewell to teammates, supporters, and the individual who he says decided he should no longer remain at the club.
All summer, the Italy international’s future has been a topic of speculation. While he made clear his intention to continue in Paris, talks over a contract renewal stalled because of disagreements on a revised wage plan. Instead of extending his stay or allowing him to leave for free when his current contract ends next year, the club moved to bring in Lille’s Lucas Chevalier as their new first-choice goalkeeper.
Just three months after helping PSG win a historic quadruple – which included their first Champions League trophy – Donnarumma says he is leaving against his wishes.
Farewell message to fans and teammates
In a post on social media, Donnarumma thanked PSG’s supporters, saying that from the day he arrived, he had given everything both on and off the pitch to defend the team’s goal. He stated that “someone has decided” he can no longer be part of the squad, calling the situation “disappointing” and “disheartening.”
The statement followed his omission from the UEFA Super Cup squad against Tottenham Hotspur, with head coach Luis Enrique explaining, “Donnarumma is out of the squad as it’s my own decision. I am 100% responsible.”
The goalkeeper expressed his hope to say a proper goodbye in front of the fans at the Parc des Princes, though he acknowledged it may not happen. He assured supporters that their affection has meant everything to him and that he will always remember the emotions and special nights they shared.
Donnarumma also addressed his colleagues, calling them his “second family” and thanking them for their battles, laughter, and shared moments.
Career in Paris and future possibilities
Since joining PSG in July 2021, Donnarumma has made 161 appearances and collected 10 trophies. His performances during the 2024–25 campaign earned him a nomination for the Yashin Trophy.
He closed his message by describing his time at the club and in the city as a great honor, offering one final “thank you” to Paris.
Where he will play next remains undecided, though recent links have connected him with Manchester United, Chelsea, Inter, and Manchester City.
