Gianluigi Donnarumma has made it clear that Manchester City was the only club he wanted to join during the summer transfer window. The Italian goalkeeper, who moved from Paris St-Germain on deadline day for £26m, said he already feels a strong connection with his new team.
Despite playing a key role in PSG’s treble-winning campaign last season, including lifting the Champions League, Donnarumma was deemed surplus to requirements by manager Luis Enrique. He described the opportunity to join City as a source of pride, especially after realizing the club and manager were keen on his arrival.
On his Premier League debut, Donnarumma helped City secure a 3-0 victory over Manchester United, keeping a clean sheet and making a crucial stop against Bryan Mbeumo. His teammates, including Erling Haaland, celebrated the save with him, demonstrating the camaraderie within the squad.
Donnarumma highlighted his strong bond with Haaland, praising him not only as a world-class player but also as a remarkable person. The goalkeeper emphasized the importance of unity, comparing the team’s spirit to that of a family where every significant moment is shared collectively.
A return to Italian roots
Born in a province of Naples, Donnarumma faces a personal challenge in the Champions League when City travel to play Napoli on Thursday. He joined AC Milan at 14, making his debut at 16 and becoming the third-youngest goalkeeper to start in Italy. Over more than 250 appearances for the Rossoneri, he built a strong reputation before moving to PSG in 2021.
During his time in France, Donnarumma won four league titles, two French Cups, and the European Cup, adding to his extensive list of honours. Despite these successes, he remains connected to his hometown, noting that many of his family and friends still live in Naples.
Looking ahead to the clash with Napoli, Donnarumma expects a tough match under the guidance of Antonio Conte, the former Chelsea and Tottenham manager. He admitted he would have preferred the game to be in Naples, and mentioned concerns about his mother’s health, hoping she will be able to support him during the game.
Enthusiasm for the City project
Donnarumma repeatedly stressed that his transfer to Manchester City was a decision made with full enthusiasm. He spoke of the excitement of joining a team where he felt wanted and appreciated, citing the Club World Cup as a moment that strengthened his desire to move.
He added that the warm welcome from teammates made him feel as though he had been part of the squad for years. For Donnarumma, the team’s collective celebration of defensive moments reflects the culture he values: solidarity and shared achievement.
The goalkeeper’s remarks underline his eagerness to contribute to City’s ambitions, confident that the unity within the dressing room will help the club continue its upward trajectory in domestic and European competitions.
