Federico Valverde’s stoppage-time penalty snatched a dramatic 1-1 draw for Uruguay against England at Wembley Stadium, denying the Three Lions a late friendly victory.

This international friendly served as a crucial warm-up for both nations. England used the fixture to experiment with tactics and assess squad depth. Uruguay, a formidable South American side, tested their lineup and cohesion against a top European opponent.

The first half unfolded as a cagey affair with neither side truly asserting dominance. England controlled possession, patiently building attacks from the back. However, Uruguay’s disciplined defense proved resilient, effectively nullifying most English threats.

Early tactical adjustments saw both managers make changes. Uruguay introduced a substitute in the 16th minute. England responded with two changes before the break, including Noni Madueke in the 38th minute, seeking to spark more attacking impetus.

Despite the changes, the teams went into halftime locked in a goalless stalemate. The atmosphere suggested that both sides needed to inject more urgency. Spectators anticipated a more open and attacking second half from both benches.

The second half brought increased intensity and a more adventurous approach. England pushed higher up the pitch, generating a series of promising attacks. Uruguay, meanwhile, remained compact, waiting for opportunities to counter-attack at pace.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 81st minute. Second-half substitute Ben White made an immediate impact, expertly slotting the ball home for England. This late goal seemed to have secured a hard-fought win for the home side.

However, the drama was far from over as the match entered its final moments. In the 90+3 minute, Ben White was shown a yellow card for a foul inside the box. The referee pointed to the spot, awarding Uruguay a crucial penalty.

Federico Valverde stepped up with confidence to take the spot-kick. The Uruguayan midfielder calmly converted the penalty in the 90+4 minute. His precise strike into the net earned Uruguay a share of the spoils and stunned the Wembley crowd.

Statistically, England held 54% of possession, demonstrating their control. They unleashed 13 shots in total, with 5 hitting the target. Uruguay registered 9 shots, but only Federico Valverde’s penalty tested the goalkeeper. Uruguay’s Fernando Muslera made 4 saves.

The 1-1 draw offered valuable lessons for both teams. For England, it highlighted the importance of focus until the final whistle. Uruguay will take confidence from their late comeback against a strong opponent.
