Forrest scores 94th-minute equaliser as Celtic sign off with a draw

Celtic signed off their triumphant Scottish Premiership campaign with a 1-1 draw with St. Mirren, with James Forrest netting a last-gasp equaliser before they lifted the trophy.

Brendan Rodgers made nine changes to the team that routed Aberdeen 5-1 in midweek on the Bhoys’ coronation day, and they almost ended a fine campaign on a flat note.

Jonah Ayunga fired through a sea of bodies and beyond Kasper Schmeichel to give St. Mirren a 51st-minute lead on a day when they could have qualified for Europe.

They needed to better Dundee United’s result against Aberdeen to reach the Conference League, though a second-half comeback for the Tangerines, who won 2-1, dashed their hopes.

St. Mirren still looked set to finish the season with a notable scalp, with Celtic passing up several chances to level before Forrest slotted home four minutes into stoppage time.

That result meant St. Mirren finished sixth, three points adrift of Dundee United and Aberdeen, with the former taking the final European spot.

Elsewhere, Barry Ferguson failed to oversee a victory in what was likely his final game as Rangers boss, as the runners-up drew 2-2 with third-placed Hibernian.

Cyriel Dessers put Rangers ahead with a neat finish on the turn in the second minute, though Hibs equalised in bizarre circumstances when Kieran Bowie smashed home mere moments after Nicolas Raskin and Dessers failed to scramble over the line at the other end.

Raskin did restore Rangers’ lead with a 50th-minute header, but home skipper Martin Boyle popped up at the back post to nod in his 20th goal of the season and deny the visitors.

Data debrief: Five-star finish for Dessers

It may have been a poor season for Rangers, but they had something to celebrate on Saturday as Dessers captured the Golden Boot with 18 goals.

He has ended the campaign with a goal in five successive games (six goals), becoming the first Rangers player to net in five straight matches since James Tavernier in April 2024.

The last forward to do so for the club, meanwhile, was Alfredo Morelos in March 2021.
