Gunners stun champions at Emirates

Arsenal took a giant stride towards the Champions League semi-finals with a sensational 3-0 victory over Real Madrid at the Emirates Stadium.

Declan Rice was the star of the show, scoring twice from two incredible free-kicks as Mikel Arteta’s side stunned the 15-time European champions.

Early on in the game, Kylian Mbappe tested David Raya with a couple of early efforts, while Thibaut Courtois was called into action to deny Thomas Partey and Rice at the other end.

The breakthrough came in the 58th minute. After Bukayo Saka was brought down 30 yards from goal, Rice stepped up and bent a glorious free-kick around the wall and into the top corner. It was his first ever direct free-kick goal in senior football and it sent the Emirates into raptures.

Real Madrid looked rattled, and Arsenal wasted no time in doubling their advantage. In the 70th minute, Rice repeated the trick, this time curling a left-sided free-kick into the top-right corner, leaving Courtois scrambling once more.

The England midfielder, who has now contributed to goals in three consecutive Champions League appearances, was punishing Madrid at every turn.

Any hopes of a Madrid comeback were extinguished five minutes later. Rice surged forward again, playing a key role in the build-up before Myles Lewis-Skelly squared to Mikel Merino.

The midfielder turned striker, calm and composed, swept the ball into the bottom corner for Arsenal’s third.

Real Madrid had their chances but lacked the cutting edge. Vinicius Junior. and Mbappe both had efforts saved or blocked, while Brahim Diaz and Rodrygo struggled to make an impact against a well-organised Arsenal defence.

Frustration boiled over for Madrid late on when Eduardo Camavinga received a second yellow card in stoppage time for kicking the ball away, compounding Los Blancos’ misery in North London.

Arsenal were forced into late changes, with Saka and Rice both taken off as precautions after knocks, but the damage had already been done. The Gunners not only kept a clean sheet but produced one of their most complete European performances in years.
