Impossible to replace Bruno, says Amorim as captain faces spell out

Manpower shortage leaves United stretchedAmorim stays upbeat despite adversity

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim admits there is no like-for-like stand-in for Bruno Fernandes after the playmaker sustained a hamstring issue in the 2-1 reverse at Aston Villa. The Portuguese star is expected to sit out Friday’s clash with Newcastle (20:00 GMT), and while Amorim avoided offering a clear recovery schedule, he hinted the layoff should be relatively brief.

Internal indications suggest the club skipper could return in time for the derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford on 17 January, which would equate to around five fixtures missed. That projection would mark the longest stretch he has spent unavailable since moving to Manchester from Sporting in early 2020.

Fernandes’ durability has been exceptional; in nearly six years he has only been absent twice because of physical issues and once due to sickness. The current setback ends a long streak of consistent availability and arrives amid early fears he might be out for as long as six weeks. Amorim underlined his influence, noting that Fernandes dictates organisation at dead-ball routines, manages positioning across the pitch, and helps guide teammates in real time.

The head coach confessed to the squad that no single figure can deliver identical contributions, stressing that the group must collectively elevate their performances to compensate for the captain’s loss.

Manpower shortage leaves United stretched

United’s attacking line is already depleted due to Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo representing their nations at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Kobbie Mainoo – the most natural candidate to fill Fernandes’ creative void – is absent through a calf concern. Amorim expects Mainoo to reappear before Fernandes.

Defensive resources are also thin. Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire remain sidelined, and Noussair Mazraoui is also away on international duty. Seven established squad members will be missing against Newcastle, though Casemiro becomes available again after serving a suspension.

Amorim highlighted senior figures Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw as personalities who could assume greater leadership responsibilities, with Diogo Dalot having worn the armband at Villa Park in Fernandes’ place. With options limited, academy youngsters Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey – who both featured off the bench at Villa – may receive additional opportunities for game time.

The upcoming league fixtures appear forgiving on paper, with Wolves, Leeds, and Burnley next after Newcastle, all of whom are involved in the relegation fight. Yet United have stumbled previously when attempts to climb toward Champions League qualification presented themselves.

Amorim stays upbeat despite adversity

Despite the list of issues, Amorim maintains faith in the squad’s potential. He reiterated his belief that, provided the players remain concentrated, victories remain achievable regardless of the absentees.

The coach’s message was clear: while the situation is far from ideal, he trusts the group’s commitment and is convinced they possess enough quality to secure positive results until key personnel return.
