Joey Barton announces that he’s quitting social media ahead of his upcoming sentencing over ‘grossly offensive’ online posts.

The 43 year old has announced he is stepping away from social media for the time being to reflect on recent professional, personal, and emotional challenges.

He said the intense pace of the online world and his own mistakes were factors which impacted his wellbeing and judgment, with the decision coming ahead of his sentencing for “grossly offensive” online trolling.

Barton added that during his break, his accounts will be managed by an admin team, and he aims to return in a more constructive and grounded manner.

🇬🇧

Over the past few years, a lot has happened. Professionally, personally and emotionally and it has reached a point where I need to pause and take proper stock of everything.

I’ve decided to step away from social media for the time being. This isn’t a decision I’ve taken…

Joey Barton tweeted: “🇬🇧 Over the past few years, a lot has happened. Professionally, personally and emotionally and it has reached a point where I need to pause and take proper stock of everything.

“I’ve decided to step away from social media for the time being.

“This isn’t a decision I’ve taken lightly, but the intensity and pace of the online world, combined with my own pressures and mistakes, have had a real impact on my wellbeing and judgement. I need space to reflect honestly on that, to understand how I’ve handled things, and to improve how I communicate going forward.

“With the move to a new studio underway, this feels like the right moment to reset, reassess my priorities, and think carefully about how I want to use my profile in the future in a way that’s constructive, responsible, and true to the values I want to stand for.

“While I’m taking this break, my accounts will be maintained solely by the admin team. I won’t be posting personally until I feel I’m in the right place to come back. @Common_SensePod

“Thank you to everyone who has supported me, challenged me, and stuck with me. I’m taking this time because I want to return better, clearer, and more grounded.

“See you on the other side. 🐕💨”

He was found guilty of six charges in ‘offensive tweets’ trial as details emerge from the Liverpool Crown Court.

The 43 year old ex-footballer turned manager and podcaster denied 12 counts of sending grossly offensive electronic communications with intent to cause distress/anxiety (under the Malicious Communications Act).

A jury at Liverpool Crown Court found that Barton had crossed the line between free speech and a crime with six posts that he published on X / Twitter.

He was cleared of six other counts that he sent a grossly offensive electronic communication with intent to cause distress or anxiety between January and March 2024.

Barton claimed the posts were “dark humour,” “crude banter,” or provocative commentary, denied implying Vine was a paedophile, and called the case a “political prosecution.”

Eni Aluko has also this week revealed that she lost out on work during her case against Joey Barton, who has been found guilty of sending “grossly offensive” posts.

Herself, Lucy Ward and Jeremy Vine won a legal victory when former footballer Joey Barton was found guilty of six counts of sending “grossly offensive” social media posts.

Aluko said to Sky News that she was “stunned and devastated” when seeing the messages from Bartonand that after the posts she didn’t leave her house for a week.

During the trial, Barton argued he was the victim of a “political prosecution” and that his comments aimed at Aluko and Ward were simply “dark and stupid humour”.

But jurors at Liverpool Crown Court found his comments had “crossed the line between free speech and a crime”.

She has also celebrated the ‘honour’ of being inducted into football’s Hall of Fame at the National Football Museum by saying: ‘I feel great, I feel a sense of relief that difficult chapter is all over.

‘I have always been very clear about making sure there are consequences for that type of conduct online, because it is bullying.

‘It was never going to be something I tolerated. I am very proud of being able to stand up to that and show that’s not something we are going to tolerate in the UK and in society.

‘There is always good news round the corner and to come out of that last week, a difficult week that ended well, and to be here now being recognised, I am very happy and very pleased,’ she said.

‘It shows you will go through things in life that are difficult but it shapes you. You come out the other end of it and people recognise you for how you stood up and how you stood by your principles and values.’

‘I feel honoured. It’s a big recognition for the journey and I just want to keep doing the honour justice.’
