Kobbie Mainoo was again at the centre of attention on Monday night as Manchester United played out a chaotic 4-4 draw with Bournemouth at Old Trafford, with an off-pitch moment adding to the wider debate around his role this season.
During the match, Mainoo’s brother was pictured in the stands wearing a T-shirt bearing the message “Free Kobbie Mainoo”, a clear reference to the midfielder’s limited involvement under head coach Ruben Amorim.
Mainoo has found opportunities hard to come by this season and is yet to start a Premier League match. His lack of game time has fuelled speculation over a possible January move away from United.
Despite that, the 20-year-old was warmly received when he was introduced as a second-half substitute against Bournemouth, coming on for Casemiro in the 61st minute to loud cheers from the home crowd.
United led the contest on three separate occasions but were unable to close out the win, eventually settling for a point. Only two late saves from Bournemouth goalkeeper Senne Lammens denied the visitors a dramatic late winner.
Amorim reflects on defensive issues
Speaking after the match, Amorim acknowledged the entertainment value of the contest but expressed frustration at his side’s defensive shortcomings.
“It was a fun game for everyone at home,” Amorim said.
“It was a fun game to watch, of course there is a feeling of scoring four goals and not winning the game.
“We are lacking quality when we defend our goal. It’s something that we need to address of course.”
During the game, cameras picked up Mainoo’s brother, former Love Island contestant Jordan Mainoo-Hames, wearing the now widely shared T-shirt. The image quickly circulated online as discussions around Mainoo’s future continued.
The midfielder is believed to be eager for more consistent football as he looks to push for a place in England’s World Cup squad. He has been linked with a move to Napoli, though sources have indicated that United are unwilling to agree to a permanent transfer.
The club may, however, be open to loan offers later in the window. Any decision is expected to depend on the return of Africa Cup of Nations participants Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo.
Manager yet to respond
Amorim was not questioned about the T-shirt incident following the final whistle, but is expected to face questions at his regular media briefing on Friday.
Before the match, the United head coach reiterated his stance on Mainoo’s situation and his broader approach to squad management.
“First of all, I say the same thing: the team comes first,” Amorim said.
“If Kobbie comes to me and talks to me, I will talk to him. I’m not going to say what I’m going to say to Kobbie, but I will be really pleased if Kobbie is coming to talk to me about that.
“I just want my players happy, and I understand that every individual has their goals. The frustration doesn’t help anybody but, again, the focus is in this game and we will see if that happens.”
