Koeman ´more disappointed than happy´ after Netherlands held by Poland

Ronald Koeman was left feeling “more disappointed than happy” following the Netherlands’ draw with Poland.

The Oranje missed the chance to secure qualification for next year’s World Cup finals, after they were held to a 1-1 stalemate in Warsaw.

Memphis Depay cancelled out Jakub Kaminski’s opener, as Ronald Koeman’s side remained three points clear of their opponents at the Group G summit heading into the final matchday.

The Netherlands, who also hold a 13-goal advantage, recorded an xG of just 0.74 from their eight attempts on Friday, despite enjoying just under 60% of possession.

“I am more disappointed than happy,” Koeman said. “But, on the other hand, we made another step toward qualification.

“It is not easy to play against teams who defend very deep. We had to be patient; we had to try to attack in different ways, but we did not create enough good opportunities.

“Poland showed their quality and their style of play: quick breaks from defence into attack. That is how we conceded the goal. This is how Poland like to play, and it makes them dangerous.”

Poland require a mathematical miracle in order to secure top spot in Group G, though they are now guaranteed a play-off spot at the very least.

“I am satisfied. Compared to our first meeting in the Netherlands, we kept the ball better and created more chances,” coach Jan Urban said.

“We had to make some changes as we had some players injured and some suspended, but the players who stepped in showed their quality. So again, I am really glad.”
