Liverpool took a crucial step in their Premier League title charge with a hard-fought victory over Wolves at Anfield. The hosts started strongly, determined to put their midweek disappointment against Everton behind them. Their breakthrough came in the 15th minute when Luis Diaz capitalized on a deflected pass from Mohamed Salah. The Colombian forward, who had been struggling in front of goal, ended his 10-game drought by forcing the ball over the line after a deflection off Wolves defender Toti Gomes.
Salah’s penalty and Wolves’ response
Liverpool doubled their advantage 22 minutes later when referee Simon Hooper awarded them a penalty. Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa brought down Diaz in the box, and Salah confidently converted from the spot, sending his shot down the middle. This goal marked his 23rd league goal of the season and continued his impressive run of form, with five goals in his last four league appearances.
Despite Liverpool’s comfortable lead at halftime, Wolves fought back in the second half. In the 67th minute, Matheus Cunha produced a moment of brilliance, curling a precise effort past Alisson to halve the deficit. The goal highlighted Liverpool’s ongoing struggles to keep a clean sheet at home, with their last shutout at Anfield dating back to December 1.
VAR drama and late Wolves pressure
Liverpool initially thought they had won another penalty when Diogo Jota went down under a challenge from Emmanuel Agbadou, but a VAR review overturned the decision, showing no contact between the players. Wolves pushed for an equalizer, creating significant chances, including a one-on-one opportunity for debutant Marshall Munetsi, which was denied by Alisson. Joao Gomes also came close but fired his effort over the bar.
As the final whistle approached, Anfield grew tense with Wolves threatening a late comeback. However, Liverpool held firm to secure the three points and restore their seven-point cushion at the top of the table. Meanwhile, Reds manager Arne Slot, who received a red card following the Everton draw, faces a Football Association charge, with a deadline of Wednesday to respond.
