Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother Andre have died in a tragic car crash in Spain. The devastating accident happened in the early hours of Thursday, 3 July 2025, near Zamora in northwestern Spain.

The crash occurred at around 00:30 local time (23:30 BST) on the Rias Bajas Highway (A-52). Police said the car, a Lamborghini, left the road after a tyre burst whilst it was overtaking another vehicle. The vehicle then caught fire, killing both brothers instantly.

Liverpool Football Club are “devastated” by the news of Jota’s “tragic passing”. The club confirmed the death of the 28-year-old and his brother, Andre. Liverpool FC have asked for privacy for the family, friends, teammates, and club staff during this difficult time. They also stated they will continue to provide them with full support.

Tributes are pouring in from across the football world and beyond. Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro described the news as “unexpected and tragic”. He said Jota “greatly honoured Portugal’s name” and sent his “deepest condolences” to their family.

UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy also shared her sympathies from the House of Commons. She called the news “heartbreaking” and extended condolences to Jota’s family, friends, and Liverpool fans worldwide.

Pedro Proenca, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, said Portuguese football is “completely devastated”. He noted Jota was “much more than an amazing player”, calling him an “extraordinary person” with “contagious joy”. FC Porto, where both brothers had previously played, are in mourning following the double tragedy. Former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher also shared his grief, calling the news “devastating”.

Diogo Jota had married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, on 22 June, just two weeks before the fatal crash. He also leaves behind his three young children.

Jota played as a striker for Liverpool and was a key part of their team. He began his football career in his native Portugal. Before moving to England, he played for Atletico Madrid in Spain. Jota then joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020. He made 182 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 65 goals. He also earned 49 caps for his country, scoring 14 goals, and won the UEFA Nations League last month with Portugal.

The passing of Diogo and Andre Silva is an “irreparable loss for Portuguese football,” said Pedro Proenca. The football community stands united in grief, remembering a talented player and a respected individual.
