Croatian midfielder Luka Modric played his final match for Real Madrid this weekend. He is leaving at the end of this season but will still play at the FIFA Club World Cup. The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner is departing the club after spending 13 years and winning 28 titles.

Luka Modric’s Journey With Madrid Ends

Another sad day will arrive for Los Blancos fans this weekend as they part ways again with one of their legends, this time it’s Luka Modric. After losing Casemiro, who joined Manchester United in 2022, and Toni Kroos, who retired in 2024, Modric is following suit.

After spending around 13 years at the club, the Croatian international won every possible Madrid trophy. Not only earning accolades for his team, Modric also received individual recognition with his success in winning the Ballon d’Or in 2013.

Madrid Keen On Starting a New Chapter After Modric

According to multiple reports, including from Fabrizio Romano, the former Tottenham Hotspur player was still keen on continuing at Madrid for another year. However, the Los Blancos management feels that the time has come for them to start a new chapter and get younger in that department.

Arriving from Tottenham back in 2012, Modric has been such a joy for Madrid, as he has provided more joy than gloom for the club and fans. Winning 28 titles, including six Champions League trophies, certainly brings plenty of enjoyment and affection to the supporters who sees him as one of their living legends already.

Modric Will Still Play for Madrid at FIFA Club World Cup

Despite already waving goodbye to the Los Blancos fans during their final league game against Real Sociedad, Modric will still have a last dance. Speaking to the media, the Croatian international revealed that he will be playing with Madrid in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup tournament.

“It will be the last dance. We will do everything to bring the trophy home,” Modric said as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

Failing to win any trophies this season, Los Blancos will be hoping that they can redeem it by taking home the FIFA Club World Cup trophy. Winning that tournament would be massive as it would put Madrid as the first winner of that new competition.

Los Blancos will start their FIFA Club World Cup journey with an intriguing game against Al Ahly, before facing Pachuca and RB Salzburg. The competition itself will kick of on June 14 and scheduled to end on July 13.
