James Maddison silenced his doubters by scoring the decisive goal in Tottenham’s 1-0 triumph over Manchester United on Sunday. The attacking midfielder capitalized on a rebound after Andre Onana saved Lucas Bergvall’s shot, tapping the ball into the net to secure all three points for his team.
Following his goal, Maddison celebrated with gestures symbolizing both speaking and silencing, making his response to recent criticism clear. He later explained his reaction in an interview with Sky Sports, saying, “There was some noise this week. People are entitled to their opinions, but I prefer to let my performances do the talking. Hopefully, a few people enjoyed seeing me as the match-winner today.”
Response to Roy Keane’s comments
In the days leading up to the match, former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane shared his doubts about Maddison’s influence at Spurs. Speaking on The Overlap podcast, Keane remarked that Maddison “got relegated with Leicester and he’ll get relegated with Spurs,” while acknowledging the midfielder’s talent. Keane further questioned Maddison’s ability to elevate Tottenham’s standing in the league, suggesting that expecting him to push the team into the top six was unrealistic.
Without directly naming Keane, Maddison acknowledged the external criticism, stating, “You do see it—it’s hard to ignore, especially when it comes from a big name. The manager advises us to shut out the noise, but with social media and messages, it’s always there.”
First league goal since December
Maddison’s goal marked a return to the scoresheet in the Premier League after a lengthy absence due to injury. The 28-year-old had been sidelined since sustaining a calf problem during a Europa League clash against Hoffenheim on January 23.
His strike against United took his tally to 10 goals across all competitions this season. Alongside his talking and shushing celebrations, Maddison also performed his signature darts throw gesture, further showcasing his confidence as he returned to form for Spurs.
