Manchester United have completed the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, with the Belgium midfielder putting pen to paper on a five-year contract at Old Trafford. United triggered a release clause worth £35m to get the deal done, making the 29-year-old their third arrival of the summer window.

Tielemans becomes the headline addition to a midfield rebuild that has been United’s stated priority throughout the close season, and he arrives with seven years of Premier League experience behind him. You can browse the club’s full statistical archive on our Manchester United hub.

The deal at a glance

Nationality: Belgium, 90 caps

Manchester United meet the £35m release clause

The clause written into Tielemans’ Villa contract allowed United to move without a protracted negotiation, a rarity in a window where the club had already seen one midfield target slip away. The fee is modest by the standards of United’s recent midfield spending, and it reflects a market where a player entering his thirties commands a lower premium than a younger alternative.

Tielemans had spent three seasons at Villa Park after arriving on a free transfer, having originally come to England with Leicester City in 2019. He leaves the Midlands as a Europa League winner, scoring in the final victory over Freiburg in May.

He will wear the number 18 shirt at Old Trafford, freed up by Casemiro, whose contract expired at the end of the season and who has since left the club.

Tielemans’ career in numbers

For a player still in his twenties, the mileage is remarkable. Tielemans made his senior debut for Anderlecht at 16 years and 82 days old, and has been a first-team regular ever since.

His most recent campaign was the leanest of his time in England, with separate calf and ankle problems limiting him to 35 appearances in all competitions for Villa. Fitness, rather than form, is the obvious question mark attached to the signing.

The big moments

Tielemans has a habit of turning up in finals. He scored the winner for Leicester against Chelsea in the 2021 FA Cup final, one of the great Wembley strikes of the modern era, and added a goal in Villa’s Europa League final triumph over Freiburg in May. He also linked up again with a familiar face at Old Trafford, with United first-team coach Jonny Evans a former team-mate.

A strong World Cup with Belgium

Tielemans arrives on the back of a productive tournament in North America. He scored an 89th-minute equaliser against Senegal to keep Belgium alive, then converted an extra-time penalty to complete a 3-2 win, taking his international tally to 15 goals in 90 caps.

His tournament ended abruptly and cruelly. He picked up an injury in the warm-up before Belgium’s quarter-final against Spain and took no part in the 2-1 defeat that sent them home.

What they said

Tielemans described his pride at joining United, saying the move “feels incredible” and framing it as the culmination of years of dedication to the game.

United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, said Tielemans has been one of the outstanding midfielders in the Premier League across the past seven years, and pointed to his technical quality, ambition and mentality. Wilcox added that the Belgian’s consistency is exceptional and that he will bring further composure, creativity and leadership to the squad.

Where does Tielemans fit in United’s midfield?

The signing looks like a number eight addition rather than a straight replacement for Casemiro in a deeper role. Tielemans will compete with Kobbie Mainoo for minutes in the more advanced central role, while Andrey Santos, signed for £48m, profiles as the six.

United are still expected to add at least one more midfielder, ideally an experienced operator capable of holding a deeper position and handling Champions League nights. A move for Atalanta’s Ederson has been paused rather than abandoned.

United’s summer so far

Andrey Santos, midfielder, £48m
Karl Darlow, goalkeeper
Youri Tielemans, midfielder, £35m
Ederson, midfielder, move on hold
Mateus Fernandes, deal collapsed

The pattern is a deliberate one. United refused to keep raising their offer for Mateus Fernandes when West Ham held firm, and they walked away rather than stretch the budget for Elliot Anderson. Instead of Fernandes’ youth they have Santos, and instead of Ederson’s experience they have Tielemans. Whether the discipline pays off will be judged over the course of the season, and our Manchester United Premier League record page will track it season by season.

What it means for Aston Villa

Villa lose a midfielder who became a central figure in Unai Emery’s European nights, and they lose him at a price the market would not otherwise have set. Replacing his passing range and his set-piece quality will be a summer priority in the Midlands. Villa’s own league history is documented in full on our Aston Villa Premier League record page, alongside the club’s all-time top scorers.

In fee terms, £35m is a long way short of the numbers that dominate the modern market.
