Manchester City are among several top European clubs are on red alert for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. This is because the Italy international has indicated that he could be open to leaving the St James’ Park at the end of the season.

Sandro Tonali, 24, has performed well for Newcastle United since joining from AC Milan in the summer of 2023. The central midfielder has scored six goals and given three assists in 52 appearances for the Magpies so far in his career. He served a 10-month ban for breaching betting rules and only became available for selection again to Eddie Howe on August 28, 2024.

After two seasons in Tyneside, Tonali is eyeing an exit which has piqued the interest of a host of clubs. Manchester City are reportedly keeping tabs on the 24-year-old’s situation at Newcastle. While the Toon Army would ideally like to keep him, there is also the sense that they could accept offers in the region of €80m this summer.

Manchester City eyeing summer move for Sandro Tonali

Manchester City will be looking to continue their squad rebuild this summer after what has been a disappointing season in the Premier League. Pep Guardiola’s side took a giant leap towards qualifying for next season’s Champions League by beating Aston Villa 2-1 at home on Tuesday evening, thanks to a 94th-minute strike from Matheus Nunes.

The Sky Blues have already started their rebuilding process by making four acquisitions during the January transfer window. To fill the void left by Rodri’s long-term knee injury, they splashed the cash to sign Nico Gonzalez.

But, with the club announcing that Kevin de Bruyne will leave the Etihad Stadium on a free transfer at the end of the season, coupled with Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva struggling to compete in the high-intense Premier League anymore, City are planning to add to their midfield unit in the summer.

The Cityzens have set their sights on Tonali, who is also on the radars of Barcelona, PSG, Juventus and Bayern Munich. The Lodi-born talent has been a top performer in midfield this season, impressing with his exceptional ball control, passing range, physicality and engine. His ability to distribute the ball under pressure and break opposition’s play would offer valuable defensive stability to City’s midfield next season.

Newcastle are unsurprisingly demanding in the region of €80m for the Italy international. If City feel Tonali is worth that price, they must splash the cash to sign him before other European clubs starting circling.
