Morrison has revived West Brom’s awful signing

West Bromwich Albion at least displayed plenty of fight away at Sheffield United on Saturday, even if another Championship game passed them by without a win falling into their lap.

Indeed, the Baggies are now winless across their last 12 second-tier games, but it was a marked improvement from the dire display put in during the 2-1 defeat against Oxford United, as the West Midlands side travelled back to the Hawthorns with a valiant 1-1 draw in tow.

The wins do need to come soon, so James Morrison’s men can push away from the dreaded drop zone, but the stand-in head coach would no doubt have been delighted with aspects of the draw in South Yorkshire.

He would have loved parts of George Campbell’s performance against Chris Wilder’s hosts, and also grimaced at his display at other points as the American endured a topsy-turvy outing, to keep up his up-and-down stay in England to date.

Campbell’s hero and villain role at Bramall Lane

Campbell has had to adapt on the job since swapping CF Montreal for a chance in the Championship with Baggies, with the 24-year-old not used to the pressures of a second-tier relegation scrap whatsoever.

He has shone in spurts for his new employers, with a brave 4.8 duels won per game across his 29 league games, even as West Brom consistently fail to pick up wins.

His overall display against the playoff-chasing Blades sums up his stay in England so far perfectly, as Campbell chipped in with his third strike already for the Baggies, smashing home a late equaliser.

Yet, he also put West Brom in said uncomfortable situation when he accidentally converted a cross past his own goalkeeper, Max O’Leary, with the number six only collecting a slim three clean sheets due to errors piling up in his defensive game.

Still, his passion to keep going and plugging away has made him a fan favourite at the Hawthorns during some very dark times.

The interim head coach has also managed to get a tune out of one of Campbell’s teammates at the back, who endured a ropey start to his Baggies career, under the cursed stint of Ramsay.

Morrison has revived West Brom’s new signing

It remains to be seen how long the West Brom legend will keep the dug-out warm for before the Championship side gambles with another managerial appointment.

Danny Imray will be hoping that Morrison sticks around for longer than a couple of games, however, as the number 30 was arguably even better than Campbell during the back-and-forth affair at Bramall Lane.

The Crystal Palace loanee would have been fearful of his first-team minutes when Ramsay was still in charge, as the 22-year-old looked continually out of his depth away from his parent side.

He wasn’t helped by the dour mood that engulfed the Hawthorns during the 34-year-old’s horrific winless streak as manager, but Imray was notably poor in defeats to Norwich City and Portsmouth, as he notably only managed to amass five accurate passes during a 3-0 loss at Fratton Park.

Losing possession 16 times against the Canaries, too, Imray just didn’t look cut out for the challenge of a basement battle in the second tier.

Those who vocally dismissed the number 30 as a Championship-level talent will be eating their words, now, though, as the Englishman strongly won six ground duels against an intimidating Blades outfit, which is more than Campbell managed during his hot-and-cold afternoon.

Also notching up one key pass when getting involved in attacks down the left, Imray will feel relieved that he has managed to come out the other side of his sticky start in the West Midlands.

Hopefully, when a new manager is appointed, he can keep up these energetic displays, with Campbell and Imray needing to be switched on from now until May, to ensure West Brom don’t disastrously drop down to League One.
