New England Revolution v Los Angeles FC: History-maker Gil relishing playoff chase

Carles Gil believes the New England Revolution can achieve “something special and important” as they chase a playoff spot.

The Revolution are currently 11th in the Eastern Conference and eight points behind the Chicago Fire, who occupy the final playoff spot.

After a nine-game winless run in MLS, New England beat D.C. United 2-0 in their last match. Gil scored and assisted in the match to become the club’s all-time leader in goal contributions.

Gil has provided 130 goal contributions (48 goals, 82 assists) for the Revolution, surpassing Taylor Twellman’s previous record of 128. The Spaniard also broke Steve Ralston’s assist record earlier this season.

The 32-year-old was pleased to break the record, but is more focused on New England’s push for the playoffs. They start their final stretch of nine games by hosting Los Angeles FC.

“It’s special to break the record,” Gil told the club website.

“Like I’ve said many times, [Twellman] is a legend here in the club, in the league. I have more games [played] than him, I think, to break the record. But it’s a pleasure to have these words about him, and he’s a big legend.

“We need to improve. We are coming from a very difficult run, having bad games.

“But like I said, maybe it’s an opportunity for this group to do something special and important, because if you ask everyone right now, no one is going to say New England is going to be in the playoffs. No one.

“So, it’s an opportunity. We need to take that opportunity and try to do it.”

LAFC are looking to top the Western Conference following on from their Club World Cup and Leagues Cup exploits.

Steve Cherundolo’s side are 12 points off leaders San Diego FC, but have three games in hand on their rivals, though their return to MLS action began with a 2-2 draw against Chicago.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

New England Revolution – Carles Gil

Gil is New England’s leading scorer in MLS this season with nine goals, and he has provided just as many assists.

Gil registered his 27th MLS regular-season game with multiple goal contributions against DC. Since his first MLS season in 2019, only Hany Mukhtar (33), Carlos Vela (29) and Lucho Acosta (28) have more games with multiple goal contributions during that span.

Los Angeles FC – Denis Bouanga

Denis Bouanga has been a talisman in front of goal for LAFC, scoring on 14 occasions. The attacker is tied for fifth among the league’s top scorers in 2025.

Bouanga scored his seventh penalty kick of 2025 in his last game – his second straight MLS season with at least seven penalties scored. Bouanga and Daniel Gazdag (2022 & 2023) are the only two players to score seven or more penalties in consecutive MLS seasons in league history.

MATCH PREDICTION – LOS ANGELES FC WIN

The Revolution earned a 2-0 shutout win over DC, snapping a nine-game winless streak. All but one of their league wins this season have been shutouts, including each of their last six victories.

LAFC recorded their seventh league draw of 2025 against the Chicago Fire and have scored multiple goals in all those matches. Only three MLS teams over the last 20 seasons have had more draws while scoring two or more goals in a season (Orlando City in 2016 – nine, San Jose Earthquakes in 2022, LA Galaxy in 2008 – eight each).

New England are hosting LAFC for the first time since 2019. The Revolution are unbeaten in their last eight home matches (W3 D5) against Western Conference teams and have just three losses in their last 20 such home games (W10 D7).

In their last six league matches, New England have won one, drawn one and lost four. LAFC, meanwhile, have won three, drawn two and lost one in their last six.

OPTA WIN PROBABILITY

New England Revolution – 26.5%

Draw – 23.7%

Los Angeles FC – 49.9%
