Oviedo and Villarreal shared the spoils in a tightly contested La Liga encounter at Estadio Nuevo Carlos Tartiere, with Nicolas Pépé’s early penalty canceled out by Ilyas Chaira’s second-half strike.

Villarreal arrived in Asturias as heavy favorites. The visitors sat third in the table with 61 points from 31 games, while Oviedo occupied the relegation zone with just 27 points. The hosts desperately needed points to escape danger, but faced a team in excellent form.

The match burst into life within minutes. Oviedo’s defense conceded a penalty in the 13th minute, and Pépé stepped up to convert from the spot. The Villarreal winger struck confidently past the goalkeeper to give the visitors an early advantage.

Oviedo responded with intensity and controlled possession throughout the first half. The home side created several chances but lacked the finishing touch to trouble Villarreal’s goalkeeper. Possession statistics showed Oviedo dominating with 58 percent of the ball, while Villarreal’s counter-attacking threat remained constant.

Villarreal’s Santiago Mouriño received a yellow card in the 37th minute for a rash challenge. The visitors maintained their lead going into the break, but Oviedo’s performance suggested they remained very much in the contest.

The second half saw Oviedo intensify their efforts. The home team continued to dominate possession and create opportunities. Their persistence paid off in the 69th minute when Chaira fired past the Villarreal goalkeeper to level the match.

Chaira’s goal energized the home crowd and shifted momentum toward Oviedo. The midfielder struck with precision after receiving a clear chance in the box. Villarreal struggled to regain their composure following the equalizer.

Both teams pushed for a winner in the closing stages. Oviedo created several dangerous moments but could not find the breakthrough. Villarreal’s defense held firm despite mounting pressure from the hosts.

The statistics reflected Oviedo’s dominance. The home side recorded 16 total shots compared to Villarreal’s seven. Oviedo’s expected goals figure stood at 0.88, while Villarreal’s xG was 1.33. Despite the visitors’ higher xG, Oviedo’s volume of play deserved at least a draw.

Pépé delivered an outstanding display for Villarreal, earning a rating of 8.5 and converting his penalty with aplomb. Chaira proved equally influential for Oviedo with a 7.9 rating and crucial goal. Both midfielders created key passes throughout the encounter.

Villarreal’s Álvaro Escandell received a yellow card in the 37th minute, while Moleiro picked up a late booking in the 90+7th minute. The match remained competitive but disciplined overall.

The draw leaves Villarreal third with 62 points from 32 games. Oviedo remain in the bottom three with 28 points from 32 matches. The result represents valuable progress for the home side’s survival hopes, though they must continue accumulating points in their remaining fixtures.
