Kylian Mbappé scored from the penalty spot in the 70th minute as France edged past a resolute Paraguay side 1-0 to reach the World Cup quarterfinals in Philadelphia.
In sweltering conditions that pushed temperatures close to 38°C, Paraguay’s ultra-defensive low block frustrated Didier Deschamps’ side for over an hour at Lincoln Financial Field.
Mandatory hydration breaks punctuated a first half in which France dominated possession without finding a way through.
France controlled roughly 80% of the ball but were reduced to speculative efforts from distance as Paraguay packed their defensive third and refused to engage in open play.
The first half was not without incident. Mbappé was fouled in the 34th minute, sparking a brief confrontation between players from both sides, though the referee kept his cards in his pocket.
Mbappé went down in the box in the 40th minute appealing for a penalty, but the referee waved play on. Bradley Barcola had already been cautioned in the 19th minute, France’s only booking of the opening period.
The deadlock was finally broken when VAR intervened after substitute Désiré Doué was challenged by Diego Gómez inside the area. The referee reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor and pointed to the spot.
Mbappé stepped up and converted coolly, netting his seventh goal of the 2026 tournament and his 19th career World Cup goal, moving within one of Lionel Messi’s all-time tally.
Paraguay pushed forward in search of an equaliser but lacked the quality to trouble France’s defence. Manu Koné picked up a yellow card in the 81st minute as the holders managed the closing stages professionally.
The result echoed the famous 1998 World Cup Round of 16 encounter when Laurent Blanc’s golden goal separated the same two nations by the same scoreline in an equally tense affair.
Gustavo Alfaro had warned before kick-off that facing France was like confronting a lightning storm. His side weathered it admirably for 70 minutes before technology intervened to end their resistance.
Deschamps acknowledged the brutal conditions beforehand, noting the heat was a disadvantage for both teams. His players managed the energy demands astutely, saving their decisive blow for the final third of the contest.
France now advance to face Morocco in Boston on July 9 after the Atlas Lions dispatched Canada 3-0 earlier in the day. Paraguay’s World Cup journey ends at the last-16 stage.
