Confidence and consistency remain keyBuilding a clear identity under new leadership

Vitor Pereira urged his Nottingham Forest squad to play with freedom before their Europa League knockout round play-off first leg at Fenerbahce — and the response was immediate.

In his first match in charge, the Portuguese coach watched his side deliver their most significant away success in European competition, securing a commanding victory in Turkey.

Murillo, Igor Jesus, and skipper Morgan Gibbs-White all found the net as Forest controlled proceedings and might even have increased their advantage further on the night.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Pereira said his team could have added two more goals. He described the result as very positive but stressed the tie is only at the halfway stage, highlighting the demanding fixture list ahead and the need for consistency.

Confidence and consistency remain key

Pereira emphasised that every member of the squad must be prepared to contribute whenever called upon. That collective responsibility, he explained, is central to his approach.

Before accepting the role, he recognised the quality within the group but believed they required positive outcomes and enjoyment in their performances to reach a higher standard.

He pointed out that organisation and belief are essential elements, adding that he had encouraged his players to show their abilities on the pitch — something he felt they achieved in Istanbul.

Although Forest sits fourth from the bottom in the Premier League, only three points above the relegation zone, progressing in Europe could provide an important lift for a club that last featured in continental competition in 1995-96.

Building a clear identity under new leadership

Forest will host Fenerbahce in the return leg at the City Ground on Thursday, 26 February (20:00 GMT), and are strong contenders to advance to the last 16, where either Midtjylland or Real Betis await.

This season has brought managerial change, with Pereira becoming the fourth coach following spells under Nuno Espirito Santo, Ange Postecoglou, and Sean Dyche, each bringing different tactical ideas.

Captain Morgan Gibbs-White said the squad adapted quickly to Pereira’s expectations. He felt the team displayed a defined style, defended effectively, and produced numerous opportunities.

The England midfielder added that the group immediately embraced the new direction. After a challenging period, he believes the clean sheet and victory arrived at an ideal time to restore belief, urging his teammates to remain united and strive to become a well-rounded side.
