A plea has been made for fans to stop singing a certain chant which was heard from the Arsenal end as Everton give perfect response to it.

During the Premier League match on the 20th of December, some Arsenal fans in the away end sang the controversial “Feed the Scousers” chant, mocking poverty in Merseyside.

Everton responded by immediately displaying the “Fans Supporting Foodbanks” logo on the big screen, highlighting their charity initiative with Liverpool foodbanks.

The chant also led to widespread criticism inside the stadium, on social media, and journalists and part of the foodbank community.

Stan Collymore called for an end to “poverty chanting,” journalist Caoimhe O’Neill praised Everton’s response and Henry Winter expressed disappointment.

Stan Collymore tweeted: “Can we finally end the poverty chanting please? Every fucking year it happens around Christmas, a time when supporters of EVERY club are battling against the tide who rely on food banks, family support with many children going without.

“You may think it’s hilarious because it was a shit chant in the 80’s after Thatcher destroyed the social fabric of society once, but 40 years on everyone reading this will more than likely know someone where food and economic poverty are real things that cause misery.

“If you hear it, call it out, it never was funny and even less so today.”

The Athletic’s Caoimhe O’Neill said: “Arsenal fans sing “feed the Scousers” and Everton put Fans Supporting Foodbanks’ logo on the screen straight away. Quality from Everton. Absolutely embarrassing from the Arsenal fans singing it. Solidarity with @SFoodbanks. Hunger doesn’t wear club colours 💙❤️”

Henry Winter tweeted: “14.1m people in the UK are “food insecure”, according to the Trussell Trust. Nationwide problem. Football fans do much-needed work with food-banks.

“Manchester United fans donated 20kg of food and £261 to their food-bank on Sir Matt Busby Way before Monday’s game v Bournemouth. Food and funds that will help support the hungry in Manchester.

“Before every game at the Emirates, Arsenal fans donate money and food, household essentials and toiletries at their collection point by the Tony Adams statue. Hugely important contribution to the Islington food-bank which helps so many people locally.

“Something for United and Arsenal fans singing “feed the Scousers” to reflect on. Hunger doesn’t wear club colours.”

😬 “Disappointed that Arsenal fans should join in that chant!”

🙅‍♂️ “They should be above that!”

He then said via talkSPORT: Obviously tuned into Arsenal Everton and I have to say on a very serious note, disappointed that Arsenal fans should chant and join in that chant, you know, it’s not an Arsenal chant but the fact that they should join in at Everton, the ‘Feed the Scousers’ chant at this time of year, well at any time of year, at Christmas, and it was only on December the 12th that Arsenal had a kind of a celebration, marking of the fact that 40 years of Arsenal in the community which Arsenal in the community, Everton in the community are two of the earliest and two of the best community operations.

“And Arsenal have if you go to Emirates on a on a match day, they have a food bank near the Tony Adams statue. It does raises important funds and donations for the Islington Food Bank Which is run by the trust or trust and if you know that area, I mean that people think of well, Arsenal is a quite well-heeled area and they think of you know, Barnsbury and Islington and areas like that, but Holloway has some, you know, fairly disadvantaged areas.

“So just on a serious note, I was really disappointed with Arsenal fans. They should be above that. Those who were singing it, anyone who sings that is just wrong.”

Twitter users gave their reaction on a plea made for fans to stop singing the chant heard from Arsenal end as Everton give the perfect response to it…

@everton_arent: That “feed the scousers” chant has to be up there with the absolute worst. I genuinely thought Arsenal fans had a bit more about them. How wrong was I. Not a word out of them on their own.

@nufcpb: It’s a disgusting chant 👍🏻 mocking poverty will never be funny or acceptable

@taahir98: Going through quotes and comments all these Londoners and patriots who pretend to care about their country are just fucking rats when you see this shit, they’re defending it cus apparently homelessness and poverty are funny.

@JCutts_afc: As someone who didnt sing it, I am ashamed to be associated with the fans that did. We’re much better than that but have let ourselves down massively and deserve all the shit that will/has come our way

@DanielSharp_: Replies on this are embarrassing. Singing about poverty isn’t banter, it’s fucked up. United were singing it tonight at *checks notes*, Aston Villa. Scummy behaviour of the highest order.

@jackthegooner1: Totally agree. Was ashamed of my fellow fans who sung that last night. We’re better than that.

@CallumMcLeod_: Agreed – I love the football craic more than any idiot but that was classless and stunk @Arsenal

@Rosscdj: If any football fan is comfortable singing this at whatever stadium, for/against whatever team. Hang your head in shame

@Ian_efc81: Probably the worst fans that have done it aswell not only once but about 5/6 times they sung it

@stekellyefc: The work @SFoodbanks do in so many communities around the country is what should be being chanted. The hard work only starts when we make small donations. These volunteers are selfless heroes who represent the very best of humanity. Poverty taunters certainly do not.

@jbefc1: Spot on this. Arsenal fans singing this a few times on Saturday. Just very, very stupid, there are food banks all over the country for a reason, including London

@PaulButlerO8: Arsenal fans chanting it yesterday at the Everton game. Soon as we were leaving the ground they were all walking away and cowardly staring at the floor.

@CFpriv_: Scummy chant, needs to end

@CeaseSayys: Disgusting stuff from sections of the fanbase 🤢🤮 Do better 😔😤

@1986_legend: Sooner clubs start communicating with their fans about these songs then sooner their clubs stop getting bad publicity

@Mattcj__: Winds me up how football fans sing this, honestly

As someone who works for a food bank hub supplying 33 food banks (20K residents a week) inc. 5 in the Boroughs of Enfield & Haringey connected to Spurs home & training grounds i know first hand how much THFC do for the local community. Please donate to https://t.co/0H9ExvGHe3 x
