PSG 1-1 Arsenal (PSG win 4-3 on pens): What Were The Main Talking Points As PSG Successfully Defend Their Champions League Crown In Budapest?

In what was another blockbuster Champions League final on Saturday evening, PSG joined an elite group as they successfully defended their European crown in the most dramatic of circumstances.

Watching Arsenal shockingly take the lead after just six minutes as German international Kai Havertz smashed home into the roof of the net, Luis Enrique’s defending champions had an almighty job on their hands in Budapest.

However, handed a golden route back into Saturday’s final as Cristhian Mosquera clumsily brought down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia just after the hour mark, reigning Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele slotted home from the penalty spot.

While we might have been treated to a grandstand finish here, it always felt that proceedings were heading towards a 12th Champions League final that would be decided by a penalty shootout.

With the eyes of the footballing world falling on Budapest, it was England international Eberechi Eze who first lost his nerve as the ex-Crystal Palace playmaker drove his effort wide of the post.

While Nuno Mendes might have then shockingly immediately missed from the spot as things were quickly tied up, it was Brazilian ace Gabriel Magalhaes who proved to be Saturday’s ultimate villain.

Needing to score to take things to sudden death, Arsenal’s defensive talisman blazed over the bar and the whole of the Arsenal squad quickly fell to their knees in the most heartbreaking of fashion.

On a night when PSG successfully defended their Champions League crown, we have taken a look at the main talking points.

PSG join an elite crew

Finally getting their hands on a maiden piece of European silverware last season as they stormed their way to an iconic 5-0 romp against Inter Milan in Munich, PSG had officially announced themselves as one of Europe’s ultimate poster boys.

Watching Luis Enrique and his superstar squad write themselves into Paris folklore, the French icons opened up proceedings this time around with their sights firmly set on officially defending their maiden European trophy.

Booking their ticket to Budapest after edging past Bayern Munich thanks to an all-time classic 6-5 aggregate win this month, the former Barcelona boss has seen his squad gain a fearsome reputation from across the continent.

Once again defending their Ligue 1 title and completing another iconic silverware sweep this season, PSG have also joined an incredibly rare group.

Becoming just the second side in the Champions League era to officially win back-to-back European crowns, it is hard to argue that PSG haven’t rubber-stamped themselves as the undisputed kings of Europe.

The most public of heartbreak for Arteta’s side

Just days removed from officially getting their hands on a first Premier League crown since way back in 2004, Arsenal travelled over to Hungary this weekend with an almighty party atmosphere in their camp.

Cementing their spot as England’s new poster boy and crowned as domestic champions for the first time in over two decades, Mikel Arteta’s side arrived in Budapest on the cusp of shattering even more records.

Remarkably not suffering a single European defeat this season and rightfully receiving a string of plaudits for their rugged approach under their Spanish tactician, many of Arsenal’s travelling support felt this was their time.

However, falling short in the most public of fashion on Saturday evening and throwing away the lead following Havertz’s clinical opener, it was more European heartbreak for the Gunners.

While the newly-crowned Premier League champions might face a speedy return home as they get their domestic title parade underway on Sunday afternoon, Saturday’s heartbreak in Budapest will have certainly dampened their celebrations in north London.

Dembele finds top gear at a crucial time

Spearheading PSG to their maiden Champions League crown out in Munich 12 months ago, Dembele was also crowned as the 2025 Ballon d’Or winner and enjoyed an iconic calendar year in Paris.

However, while the red-hot Kvaratskhelia might have been PSG’s ultimate talisman on the European stage this year, Demebele once again stole all of the headlines here and leaves Budapest as PSG’s ultimate hero.

Dragging Enrique’s side level and cooly converting from the penalty spot in the second-half, the one-time Barcelona youngster has certainly hit top gear at a crucial time.

Bagging an eighth Champions League strike of the season on Saturday evening and producing a Man of the Match performance under the brightest of lights, Dembele will certainly play a leading role of France at this summer’s World Cup.

Signing off the 2025/26 campaign with the most talismanic of late flurries, the 29-year-old has also recorded 11 direct goal contributions across all competitions since returning from March’s international break.
