Scottish Premiership Title Race Goes Down to the Wire as Rangers lose to Motherwell

Rangers’ Scottish Premiership title hopes suffered a significant blow on a dramatic afternoon at Ibrox, as Emmanuel Longelo’s deflected 90th-minute winner secured a sensational 3-2 victory for Motherwell in a five-goal thriller that will be remembered as one of the most extraordinary matches of the season.

Danny Rohl’s side appeared to have rescued an unlikely point after recovering from a two-goal deficit, only for Motherwell to deliver a hammer blow in the dying moments. The result leaves Rangers languishing behind both Celtic and league leaders Hearts in what has become a gripping three-way title race, while Motherwell’s first win since late February breathes fresh life into their European ambitions.

A First Half to Forget for the Hosts

The visitors arrived at Ibrox with little reason for optimism, having endured their worst run of the season with four defeats in five matches. Yet from the opening whistle, Jens Berthel-Askou’s side played with the bravery, movement, and fluidity of a team transformed.

Lukas Fadinger opened the scoring with a clinical finish, calmly slotting home Stephen O’Donnell’s incisive pass into the area. The goal was the culmination of a beautifully constructed move that exposed Rangers’ defensive frailties and silenced the home crowd.

Worse was to follow on 25 minutes. Tom Sparrow whipped in a wonderful cross from the right, and Longelo arrived perfectly to dispatch a first-time finish past Jack Butland. For the second consecutive match, Rangers found themselves two goals adrift inside the opening half hour, having faced a similar predicament against Falkirk a fortnight earlier.

The Ibrox faithful were left bewildered. For a team embroiled in a tense title fight, Rangers’ first-half performance was alarmingly subdued. They were comprehensively outplayed by a Motherwell side executing their manager’s philosophy with ruthless precision.

Rohl’s Bold Half-Time Gamble

Recognising the gravity of the situation, Rohl made a triple substitution at the interval, withdrawing Bojan Miovski, Jayden Meghoma, and Tochi Chukwuani in favour of Mikey Moore, captain James Tavernier, and Mohamed Diomande. The changes injected immediate urgency into Rangers’ play.

Djeidi Gassama’s cross nearly led to a goal when it clipped the top of the bar, signalling the shift in momentum. Within minutes of the restart, Youssef Chermiti curled home a composed finish to halve the deficit and reignite the atmosphere inside the stadium.

The Portugal under-21 international then turned provider and goalscorer in equal measure, heading a cross off team-mate Nico Raskin to bring Rangers level. The Belgian midfielder’s involvement in the equaliser gave the home side genuine belief that a remarkable comeback was within reach.

Motherwell’s Decisive Counter-Punch

Rangers piled forward in search of a winner, but Motherwell weathered the storm with admirable composure. Despite being unable to sustain their first-half brilliance, they remained dangerous on the counter-attack and refused to retreat into a defensive shell.

The decisive moment arrived in the 90th minute. After yet another swift Motherwell break, Longelo unleashed a shot that took a cruel deflection on its way past Butland, sending the travelling support into raptures and leaving the Ibrox crowd in stunned silence.

Speaking after the match, a philosophical Rohl reflected on his side’s response to adversity. The German acknowledged the difficulty of recovering from a two-goal deficit and praised his players’ character, while emphasising that “four more finals” remained in their pursuit of the title.

Berthel-Askou could scarcely conceal his delight, describing his team’s first-half performance as being “right up there with us at the very best.” The Dane admitted the second half had been more challenging but was particularly impressed with his players’ composure in front of more than 50,000 hostile supporters.

Implications for the Title Race

The defeat carries significant ramifications for Rangers, who missed the opportunity to leapfrog Celtic and apply pressure to leaders Hearts. With tricky away fixtures looming at Tynecastle, Celtic Park, and the Falkirk Stadium, dropping points at home at this stage of the campaign represents a worrying trend that Rohl must address swiftly.

Whether this defeat proves fatal to Rangers’ championship aspirations or merely a temporary setback remains to be seen. What is undeniable is that the margin for error has narrowed considerably.

For Motherwell, the victory is transformative. Sitting fourth in the table, their European ambitions have received a substantial boost, and the manner of the win — particularly that imperious first-half display — suggests Berthel-Askou’s project is back on track after a worrying wobble.

What Comes Next

Rangers now have a full week to regroup before a blockbuster bank holiday Monday trip to face league leaders Hearts at Tynecastle, with kick-off scheduled for 17:30 BST. Motherwell, meanwhile, travel to the Falkirk Stadium on Saturday at 15:00, having claimed just a single point from their three previous Premiership encounters with that opposition this season.
