Teammates fear Bruno Fernandes’ departure

Bruno Fernandes was the subject of strong transfer talk last summer, yet Manchester United managed to keep hold of their midfield leader. Since joining from Sporting CP in January 2020, the Portugal international has grown into a central figure at Old Trafford and remains one of the league’s standout performers in his role.

The 31-year-old was appointed skipper during Erik ten Hag’s tenure and continued to lead the side after Ruben Amorim took charge. Despite United’s inconsistent campaign, Fernandes has maintained a high level of output and influence, underlining his importance to the team.

Consistency amid turbulence

In a season filled with uncertainty for the Red Devils, Fernandes has been among the few reliable contributors. Across all competitions, he has recorded five goals and eight assists from 19 appearances, while also topping the Premier League assist chart with eight.

Data from Squawka highlights his creative dominance, showing that no player has fashioned more opportunities than Fernandes this term, with 56 chances created. He has produced at least five chances in a single league match on six separate occasions, a feat unmatched by any other player this season.

Dressing room views on his future

Even with his ongoing impact, questions continue to surround Fernandes’ long-term future, particularly with his contract running until 2027. Interest from Saudi Arabian clubs is expected to resurface, while a recent report suggested Real Madrid are also monitoring his situation.

According to The Sun, some United players believe their captain may be nearing the end of his patience at the club. A source claimed there is a sense within the squad that Fernandes feels frustrated by ongoing instability, though teammates would understand his decision should he choose to move on.

The same report suggested a transfer to Saudi Arabia remains unlikely due to his strong footballing values. Nevertheless, the source emphasised that Fernandes’ commitment since his arrival has never been in doubt, and his potential departure would be met with respect inside the squad.

United’s reliance and the road ahead

Earlier in the campaign, Fernandes confirmed that Amorim played a key role in persuading him to reject an approach from Al-Hilal last summer. With the Portuguese coach now gone, speculation has intensified regarding what lies ahead for the midfielder.

United struggled creatively during Fernandes’ recent three-match absence through a hamstring issue, further illustrating his value. With his 32nd birthday approaching next season, planning for the future will eventually become necessary.

For now, however, Fernandes continues to operate at an elite level and remains vital to United’s ambitions. Given his current form and influence, the club would be wise to keep their captain for as long as possible.
