Richarlison’s Stunning Scissor Kick Inspires Tottenham to 3-0 Victory Over BurnleyThomas Frank Secures First Premier League Win as Spurs Manager

Tottenham Hotspur began their Premier League campaign in emphatic fashion with a 3-0 win over Burnley, as Richarlison stole the show with a sensational scissor kick. The Brazilian forward struck twice to mark Thomas Frank’s first league game in charge with three points, while Brennan Johnson sealed the victory with a composed finish.

The win puts Spurs at the top of the early standings, tied with Liverpool and Sunderland on three points. Burnley, meanwhile, find themselves at the opposite end of the table after struggling to make an impact at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

How the Match Unfolded

Spurs wasted no time in making their intentions clear. Within the opening 30 seconds, Lucas Bergvall forced goalkeeper Martin Dubravka into action with a sharp effort from a tight angle.

The breakthrough came in the 10th minute when Maxime Esteve’s poor clearance was punished. Mohammed Kudus pounced on the loose ball and teed up Richarlison, who struck an instinctive volley past Dubravka to give Spurs the lead.

Burnley attempted to grow into the game and created moments of danger, but they failed to convert their chances. After the break, Richarlison continued to torment the Clarets’ defence, forcing Dubravka into another key save before being denied by Esteve’s block.

On the hour mark, however, the Brazilian forward produced a moment of brilliance. Meeting Kudus’ cross, Richarlison launched into a scissor kick that flew past Dubravka, doubling Spurs’ advantage and sending the home crowd into raptures.

Just six minutes later, Spurs sealed the points. Pape Sarr sliced through Burnley’s defence with a precise through-ball, setting up Brennan Johnson, who calmly slotted past Dubravka to make it 3-0. Burnley offered little in response as Spurs comfortably saw out the win.

Richarlison Shines Under Thomas Frank

After a disappointing 2024/25 season, Tottenham underwent significant changes over the summer, with Thomas Frank replacing Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs had already shown signs of promise in Frank’s first competitive outing during the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain, where they surrendered a 2-0 lead and lost on penalties. Despite that setback, the new boss’s vision was evident against Burnley.

Richarlison, who endured a mixed campaign last season, thrived in his new role. His sharp movement, instinctive finishing, and his stunning bicycle kick highlighted his importance to the team. The early chemistry between him and Kudus could prove decisive for Spurs in the months ahead.

Meanwhile, Dominic Solanke made his return from an ankle injury, nearly adding to the scoreline with a late chance, as Frank rotated his squad ahead of their tough trip to Manchester City next weekend.

Burnley’s Struggles in Premier League Return

Burnley, fresh from automatic promotion, entered the Premier League with optimism. Scott Parker’s side spent heavily in the summer transfer window to strengthen their squad but suffered a tough reality check in North London.

Despite having the best defensive record in the Championship last season, Burnley found it difficult to cope with Spurs’ relentless attack. Goalkeeper James Trafford, who played a key role in their promotion, departed for Manchester City, and his absence was felt.

While Jaidon Anthony offered a spark on the counter and Hannibal Mejbri nearly broke through, poor decision-making in the final third cost Burnley dearly. Their frustration grew when Johnson’s strike came after Esteve appeared to be fouled by Richarlison in the build-up.

The Clarets now face another stern test when they meet Sunderland next weekend, a clash that already feels crucial in their battle for survival.

Key Takeaways

Richarlison scored twice, including a spectacular scissor kick, to lead Spurs to victory.

Mohammed Kudus impressed on his debut, assisting both of Richarlison’s goals.

Brennan Johnson added a third to secure the three points.

Thomas Frank begins his Premier League reign with a convincing win.

Burnley struggled to capitalize on their chances and face an uphill battle this season.

What’s Next for Spurs and Burnley?

Spurs travel to face Manchester City next weekend in what will be a true test of Frank’s tactical approach. For Burnley, their clash against Sunderland offers a more realistic opportunity to get points on the board.

If Richarlison and Kudus continue to combine with such effectiveness, Tottenham could emerge as a serious contender for European places this season.
