Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a deal worth up to £100 million, breaking the club transfer record for the second time in a matter of days. The Italy midfielder has agreed his move to north London, subject to a work permit, and becomes the sixth arrival of a remarkable summer window under Roberto De Zerbi.

Spurs will pay Newcastle an initial £92.5 million, with a further £7.5 million in performance related add-ons linked to European qualification. The fee eclipses the £85 million paid to West Ham United for Mateus Fernandes at the start of July, which had itself broken the previous club record of £65 million set by the signing of Dominic Solanke in 2024.

Why Tonali Chose Tottenham

Tonali was a target for several leading clubs, with Manchester City among those credited with interest, but the chance to work under compatriot Roberto De Zerbi proved decisive. The Italian head coach has been unusually hands on in the transfer market this summer, and Tonali is understood to have been one of his priority targets from the moment the window opened.

Newcastle rejected an initial bid of around £75 million before continued talks led to an agreement at their full asking price. The 26 year old made 53 appearances for the Magpies in the 2025-26 season, and Newcastle bank a profit of around £45 million on the £55 million they paid AC Milan for him in 2023. Only the £125 million sale of Alexander Isak to Liverpool has brought the Tyneside club a bigger fee.

Spurs Smash £200m Spending Barrier

Tonali’s arrival takes Tottenham’s summer outlay past £237 million, surpassing the £225 million spent in the summer of 2023 as the club’s biggest ever single window spend. It marks a dramatic change of direction after back to back 17th place Premier League finishes, with survival only secured on the final day last season.

The club have balanced the books in part through sales, with 19 year old defender Luka Vuskovic joining Brighton for £50 million despite never making a competitive appearance for the club. What Tonali Brings to N17

Tonali arrives as one of Europe’s most complete central midfielders, combining tenacity out of possession with the passing range and box to box energy that made him a mainstay in Serie A with AC Milan before his move to England. Alongside Fernandes, he gives De Zerbi a rebuilt engine room designed to lift Spurs away from the relegation places and back towards the European positions.
