UEFA has begun disciplinary proceedings against Chelsea winger Pedro Neto following an incident involving a ball boy during the club’s Champions League loss to Paris Saint‑Germain. The episode occurred late in the first leg of the last-16 tie at Parc des Princes, where the French side secured a 5-2 victory.

The Portugal international pushed the ball boy in stoppage time while trying to retrieve the ball quickly. The youngster, who had been sitting on a chair, was knocked off balance and fell, which immediately drew attention from players on both sides.

The moment quickly escalated into a confrontation between members of both teams on the pitch as emotions ran high near the end of the match.

UEFA statement and disciplinary process

European football’s governing body confirmed that the matter is now under formal review. In its announcement, UEFA stated that proceedings had been launched against Neto in relation to “unsporting behaviour”, citing the organisation’s disciplinary regulations.

The statement added that the case will now be considered by UEFA’s disciplinary authorities, who will determine whether any sanction is necessary. No decision regarding a potential punishment has yet been announced.

The governing body indicated that its disciplinary panels will assess the situation before delivering a ruling at a later stage.

Neto apologises and explains the reaction

After the game, Neto addressed the situation and expressed regret for his actions. Speaking to TNT Sports, the 26-year-old said the moment happened in the heat of the match as he attempted to speed up play.

He insisted the behaviour did not reflect his character and said he felt compelled to apologise to the youngster immediately after the incident. Neto explained that he handed over his shirt as a gesture of goodwill while repeatedly saying sorry.

The winger also noted that communication was difficult because he does not speak much French. According to Neto, his Portugal teammate Vitinha helped explain to the ball boy that the situation arose from the intensity of the match.

Neto added that the situation ended on a positive note, saying the ball boy eventually laughed and appeared satisfied with the apology.

Focus turns to second leg at Stamford Bridge

The first-leg defeat leaves Chelsea facing a significant challenge in the return fixture against PSG. The London club will host the French champions next Tuesday in the second match of the tie.

Before that encounter, Chelsea must first turn their attention to domestic competition. They are scheduled to welcome Newcastle United to Stamford Bridge on Saturday in the Premier League.
