West Brom sack Mowbray after Derby defeat

West Bromwich Albion have sacked head coach Tony Mowbray just three months into his second spell with the club.

Mowbray was relieved of his duties after the Baggies were beaten 3-1 by relegation-threatened Derby County at the Hawthorns on Monday, with assistant Mark Venus also leaving his position.

That was West Brom’s fifth defeat in six matches, which all but ended their play-off hopes for this season.

Mowbray, who guided the club to the Premier League in the 2007-08 season during his first spell in charge, returned in February for a second stint following Carlos Corberan’s departure to Valencia.

Assistant Head Coach Mark Venus has also departed.

The club would like to place on record its thanks to Tony and Mark for their efforts – but has made the decision to part company following a series of poor results.

However, he oversaw just five wins from 18 league games – including one in the last nine – with the Baggies six points adrift of sixth-place Coventry City with just two games remaining.

That ultimately cost the 61-year-old, with former midfielder James Morrison in temporary charge while the club search for their seventh permanent manager in under six years.

“The club would like to place on record its thanks to Tony and Mark for their efforts – but has made the decision to part company following a series of poor results,” West Brom said in a statement.

“Tony and Mark will forever be welcome at the Hawthorns, and their contributions to the club winning the 2007-08 Championship title will never be forgotten.”
