Zinedine Zidane revealed he has not yet spoken with Kylian Mbappe about the France captaincy role.
Zidane was officially announced as France’s new head coach on Tuesday, signing a four-year deal to take him through to the end of the 2030 World Cup.
It is his first role since leaving Real Madrid for the second time in 2021, having won three Champions League and two LaLiga titles across a combined five years with Los Blancos.
Zidane, who won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 with France, will take charge of his first game on September 25, when Les Bleus face Turkiye in the Nations League.
Mbappe captained France at the 2026 World Cup, but is yet to hold talks with Zidane about the role.
“We haven’t spoken with Kylian; the most important thing for him is to rest,” Zidane said in his press conference.
“We’ll have the opportunity to discuss all of this [the captaincy] with him and all the players soon in September.”

Mbappe posted a story on Instagram with the caption: “Welcome home” to congratulate Zidane on the head coach role.
The 27-year-old starred for France at this summer’s World Cup, winning the Golden Boot with 10 goals to become the competition’s all-time leading scorer (22).
With two goals and an assist against England in the third-place play-off, Mbappe recorded the most goal involvements on record (since 1966) at a single World Cup tournament (14 β 10 goals, four assists). Β
He also ended the tournament with 23 shots on target, the most at a single edition of the World Cup since Eusebio (29) in 1966.
