The incredible statistics behind McLaren’s 1000 F1 Grands Prix

McLaren are set to celebrate their 1000th F1 race at this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix – marking another milestone in the team’s journey that started in the 1960s with founder Bruce McLaren. Here, F1.com gathers some of the standout statistics that show just how storied and successful a run it has been…

— 61 —

As touched on above, Bruce McLaren founded his eponymous team all the way back in 1963, initially tackling the Tasman Series – which staged events in Australia and his native New Zealand – with modified Coopers, while also developing sports cars.

McLaren entered F1 at the start of the 1966 season, with Bruce himself driving until a Can-AM testing crash at Goodwood in 1970 tragically took his life. McLaren’s legacy lived on, though, and the outfit have just kicked off their 61st campaign.

— 203 —

McLaren’s first F1 victory came courtesy of Bruce at the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix, with 202 more following over the years – their most recent triumph being logged via Lando Norris in Sao Paulo late last season.

Ayrton Senna holds the record for the most race wins as a McLaren driver, having scored 35 during his time at the squad, ahead of Alain Prost on 30, Lewis Hamilton on 21 and Mika Hakkinen on 20.

— 561 —

When it comes to podiums, McLaren have achieved a whopping 561. To put that into perspective, only four teams (Ferrari, McLaren, Williams and the defunct Lotus) have started more than 430 Grands Prix in F1 history.

— 56 —

More than a quarter of McLaren’s 203 Grand Prix wins have been earned as part of 1-2 finishes – Bruce and fellow New Zealander Denny Hulme achieving the first at the 1968 Canadian Grand Prix.

Senna and Prost are top of the list with 14 perfect results, scored while they squabbled for the 1988 and 1989 world titles, followed closely by 13 for Hakkinen and David Coulthard through the late-1990s and early-2000s.

— 10 —

McLaren now boast 10 Teams’ Championship titles, winning in 1974, 1984, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1998, 2024 and 2025 – the latter two moving them up to second in the all-time list, ahead of Williams and behind only Ferrari (on 16).

— 13 —

There is even more to shout about when it comes to Drivers’ Championship crowns. Emerson Fittipaldi took the first in 1974, followed by James Hunt in 1976, Niki Lauda in 1984, Prost in 1985, 1986 and 1989, Senna in 1988, 1990 and 1991, Hakkinen in 1998 and 1999, Hamilton in 2008, and Norris in 2025.

— 177 —

As for pole positions, McLaren have 177 of them. Senna again tops this list with 46, ahead of Hakkinen and Hamilton, who both claimed 26, and Norris, who is up to 16.

— 184 —

McLaren have also set plenty of fastest laps – 184 to be precise. Hakkinen holds this biggest share with 25, followed by Prost on 24 and Raikkonen and Norris, who are both on 19.

— 760 —

Another eye-catching statistic relates to McLaren’s races in the points – no fewer than 760 times from 999 races so far, and again behind only Ferrari (877) in the history books.

— 7,896.5 —

In terms of overall points, McLaren have 7896.5 under their belts, with the first coming via Bruce at the 1966 British Grand Prix, and the most recent via Norris and Piastri in the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix Sprint.

— 11,943 —

Now we get into some seriously big numbers. Across their F1 journey to date, McLaren have led 11,943 laps, behind only (you guessed it) Ferrari on 16,087.

That translates to 57,244 kilometres in the lead, or almost one and a half trips around the world.

— 106,236 —

Things go up another notch for our final statistic – laps raced. McLaren have logged more than 100,000 between their debut in 1966 and the latest round of the 2026 campaign.

That means 514,659 kilometres worth of laps completed, which would take them from Earth to the Moon and around a third of the way back.
