A four-time World Champion holds the key this year
Silly season kicked off a little earlier than usual in 2026 when four-time World Champion Max Verstappen admitted in Japan that he was pondering his future in the sport. The Dutchman has a contract to race with Red Bull until at least the end of 2028, but his deal is understood to have break clauses, which is why Mercedes last year gave chase to his services.
Verstappen waved away Mercedes boss Toto Wolff’s advances to commit to Red Bull for 2026, but his future once again became the subject of speculation early doors in this campaign following his comments at Suzuka and the fact Red Bull looked like a midfield team, rather than race win contenders, in the first three Grands Prix of the campaign.
