Is Fujikura’s stiffest shaft really right for this 49-year-old? Yes

In the professional gear world, finding the right shaft isn’t about chasing a brand name — it’s about matching the engine to the driver (the player).

The shaft is the primary timing mechanism that dictates feel and the delivery of the club face to the ball. Currently, Fujikura is riding a wave of historical momentum, as the Ventus Black has been the shaft of choice for the winner of the last five consecutive majors on the men’s Tour. It has become the definitive choice for the best players in the world.

If anyone has seen my action on Instagram or YouTube, you know that I have a ton of moving parts. I peel it inside, come over it a bit, and then more or less jump out of the way to shallow it out. It is almost a fade pattern while trying to hit draws. It’s ugly, but I’ve played a ton of good golf (although inconsistent) over the past few years. In my experience, really stout and — most times — heavier parts have worked for me.

I judge all shafts by my ability to hit the center of the club face. The Ventus Black with VeloCore+ has yet to fail me there, and even more, it has traveled from driver to driver. During Fully Fit, all of my fittings resulted in Ventus Black VeloCore+. I’ve never had that happen before.

Today, with the recent launch of the new TR line with Velo+, I wanted to see if I could actually improve on that performance.

Maximizing Center-Face Contact

The most critical metric in any fitting is strike consistency. As master fitter Ryan Massicci noted, “If you aren’t hitting the center of the face, you aren’t maximizing ball speed.”

While the standard Ventus Black VeloCore+ provides excellent stability, the VeloCore+ upgrade—which uses a re-engineered multi-material bias core — tightens dispersion even further. During testing, I recorded a smash factor of 1.51 (!!). Because the technology reduces the “twist” of the head during transition and impact, I found the center of the face more often, allowing us to focus on speed gains rather than just fixing a miss.

Structural Stability in the Handle with TR Velo+

My “jumping” move at the ball puts immense stress on the handle section. When I tested the TR Blue, I felt the shaft kick too early, making me lose the sense of the head’s position. The TR offered the same struggles with that “kick” coming at the bottom. In my case, it’s one more “thing/variable” to manage. No thanks.

The TR Black addresses this specifically by integrating Spread Tow carbon fiber in the handle. This increases torsional stiffness exactly where an aggressive pull-down move requires it. It provides the stability to swing hard out to the right — eliminating the right-miss—without the shaft feeling dead. It’s a reinforced feel that allows for maximum speed without the fear of the shaft “timing out” or lagging behind my hands. Granted the head setup is a HUGE part of this; it all has to jive.

Raising the Floor of Performance

Fitting isn’t just about your best drive; it’s about your worst one. As I’ve mentioned ad nauseam, I want a HIGH floor.

During the session, I hit several shots high on the heel. Normally, that’s a shot that flares right and loses significant distance. However, the TR Black VeloCore+ kept those misses remarkably online, with some finishing only inches from the target line. By tightening the dispersion of off-center hits, the shaft ensures that even with my “ugly” swing, a poor strike still keeps me in the game.

Golf shafts are weird. It’s why you test everything

Comparing the Profiles: Ventus Black Velo + vs. TR Black Velo +

When choosing between these two high-performance options, the differences come down to how much “load” you put on the club.

The Ventus Black VeloCore+ remains a low-launch, low-spin powerhouse with an ultra-stiff tip section. It offers a smooth, linear, and “stout” feel that appeals to fast, aggressive players.

The Ventus TR Black VeloCore+, by comparison, pushes the launch and spin into an “ultra-low” category. By reinforcing the handle section with Spread Tow material, it feels even more “locked-in” and stable than the original. This is designed specifically for extreme speeds and golfers with high-load transitions who need the stiffest handle profile Fujikura has ever produced.

The Synopsis of Ventus Black: Regardless of the sub-model, the Black profile is built for Stability. It is the lowest-launching and lowest-spinning member of the Ventus family. By utilizing an ultra-stiff tip section to prevent the face from twisting at impact, it has become the ultimate “anti-left” weapon for the world’s highest-speed players.

This is where it gets really interesting and where the video shows just how personal shafts are. YES, on paper, Ventus Black in any form is a low-launch, low-spin part. However, for me, it’s the shaft that not only puts me in the best place from a strike quality and trust perspective, but it’s the shaft that keeps me in the perfect launch and spin window. It’s not because im so fast and strong either, it’s because based on my delivery and everything else that’s going on, Ventus Black gives me the best chance to HIT THE MIDDLE of the face.

Honestly, folks, that’s all that matters.

The New Setup

Fujikura 2026 Ventus TR Black Wood Shaft (Velocore+)

Fujikura 2026 Ventus TR Black Wood Shaft (Velocore+)

Built for speed and control, the Fujikura VENTUS TR Black Shaft is engineered for players who generate powerful swings and demand maximum stability through impact.
The shaft is powered by VeloCore+ technology, Fujikura’s advanced multi-material core structure designed to reduce twist and increase energy transfer throughout the swing. The result is a more stable delivery that helps aggressive players maintain tighter dispersion and consistent ball speed.

In all honesty, the way I’m choosing to set up my bag to only hit pull draws is more survival than anything else. With the summer coming and a ton of golf to play, I needed to find a swing and some clubs to complement it to navigate the summer, keep a high floor, and make solid golf within reach. Do I think that I’ll be a Ventus Black guy forever? No. But the cool thing is, Fujikura has five other Ventus options to choose from, and I know, regardless of where my action evolves to, they’ve got a whip to make it sing.
