TaylorMade MG5 Wedges Have 5 PGA Tour Wins in 2026. Here’s How to Tell Which Grind You Need

The MG5 is racking up hardware from Kapalua to Augusta. It also won the second-best wedge of 2025 in our annual wedge testing. But with six grind options, picking the right one matters. Here’s everything you need to know.

When TaylorMade launched the MG5 in August 2025, the headline was straightforward. The Milled Grind family had gone fully forged for the first time. Soft carbon steel, saw-milled grooves pushed to the legal limit and a Spin Tread face designed to hold spin in wet conditions.

The MG5 finished runner-up overall in our 2025 wedge test with an 8.8 out of 10, posting standout scores for consistency (9.1), accuracy (8.7) and spin (8.7). Testers noted it was one of the tightest performers in carry-distance control across full swings, 50-yard dry shots and 50-yard wet shots. It also held nearly all of its spin on wet shots.

Which grind is right for you?

If you are not sure which grind fits your game, TaylorMade’s MyMG5 selector tool walks you through swing style, typical lie conditions and preferred shot types to match you to the right grind. Here are some details to help you narrow things down.

SB — Standard Bounce: The all-rounder

The SB is the safe default for most golfers. Its four-way camber lets you play it from tight fairways, firm lies and light rough without changing much about your technique. You can play chip-and-run shots with a slightly forward shaft lean, use the full bounce for forgiveness or even pop the handle up a touch and play it toe-down to take some bounce off on tighter lies.

SC — Standard Camber: The creative shot-maker

The SC is built for golfers who like to work the face. If you like to open it up for high, soft lob shots, close it for low runners or play across a range of turf conditions, the SC is a good fit.

Significant heel grinding means the heel stays close to the ground even when the face is laid open. You can play high lob shots. The wider sole also gives you some extra forgiveness on less-than-perfect contact. If you play on a course that runs medium to firm and like having multiple shot options, the SC is a good option to consider.

SX — Standard Xtra: The mishit forgiver

The SX has the widest sole of the three standard grinds, making it the most forgiving on off-center contact. The smart design element is the reverse-C camber cut into the trailing edge. If you don’t play every week and occasionally catch it a little heavy, the SX will save you strokes that other wedges would lose. It’s also good out of bunkers.

HB — High Bounce: For steep swings and soft turf

The HB is specifically designed for golfers who get steep into the ball. The high bounce keeps the club moving through the turf rather than getting stuck. It’s also the easiest wedge in the lineup to escape bunkers with. The extra bounce splashes the sand forward with a shallow entry.

If you play on soft or damp courses or frequently find yourself chipping from rough around small greens, the wider sole glides through long grass rather than catching. The tradeoff: if you play firm or links-style courses with compact sand, the extra bounce can work against you.

LB — Low Bounce: For firm lies and shallow swingers

The LB is for firm, compact or links-style conditions. Less bounce means the leading edge can get under the ball more easily on tight lies, hardpan and firm downslopes. It also suits bunkers with thin sand. The LB requires better technique than the HB or SX as there’s less margin for error. However, in the right conditions, it unlocks shots the other grinds can’t hit as cleanly.

TW — The Tiger Woods Grind: A separate wedge

The TW grind is not available as a standard option on the MG5 wedge. TaylorMade sells it as a separate product at a slight premium.

The grind itself was developed around Tiger’s current wedge preferences. It features increased camber, a new leading-edge blend for added effective bounce in the heel and additional heel relief. It’s a setup built for a player who wants maximum versatility.

The TW grind is best suited to low-handicap players with strong short-game technique who want to work the face in multiple directions and need a grind that stays consistent no matter the shot shape.

Not sure which grind fits your game? TaylorMade’s MyMG5 selector tool walks you through swing style, typical lie conditions and preferred shot types to match you to the right grind.
