The Best And Worst Dressed At The U.S. Open

Here at MyGolfSpy, we appreciate a well-dressed golfer.

Sometimes, professional golf feels like a sea of bland—muted colors, safe choices and guys who put little effort into their look—so it’s worth calling out those who look sharp.

And, of course, we have to call a spade a spade with some of the worst looks (if we see one more disgusting NIKE polo, we might puke).

To break down the fashion from the first two rounds of the U.S. Open, I enlisted the help of my colleague, MGS fashion expert Isaiah McGahee.

Here are our best and worst-dressed golfers so far at Shinnecock.

The best-dressed so far

Keith Mitchell (Thursday)

Isaiah: It’s not a best-dressed list without Keith Mitchell. Cashmere Keith is more than likely the best dressed player on Tour. The cardigan, light pink polo and stone colored pants are about as classic of a private Northeast club look as you can get. Seriously, this look is excellent.

Sean: So effortlessly crispy. Mitchell just oozes country club cool.

Tommy Fleetwood (Thursday)

Isaiah: This is Tommy Fleetwood’s best look by far. As soon as I saw him with this outfit on, I immediately texted the MyGolfSpy group chat “Fleetwood DRIPPED OUT for round one.” Clearly, I wasn’t the only one. The golf ball cardigan set the internt abalze because everyone was on board with it. However, not everyone is on board with the price. $750 for a cardigan is legitimately insane. However, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t look great and thar Fleetwood didn’t look absolutely incredible because he certainly did.

Sean: Find someone who loves you like Tommy loves brown on brown. I like his Masters outfit a little more, but the golf ball cardigan goes pretty hard.

Billy Horschel (Friday)

Isaiah: Billy Horschel always looks like a million bucks (no duh, he’s sponsored by Polo Ralph Lauren). His scripting for round two featured white pants with a navy and white micro striped polo shirt. To top it off, he wore a dual colored vest—white on the front and navy in the back. In order to fully appreciate this ensemble, you just had to see it in person. This was my favorite look of the entire U.S. Open so far.

Sean: I really love the color proportions here. White shoes, white and navy vest, white hat, navy polo—it just all adds up to something modern but professional.

Adam Scott (Thursday)

Isaiah: Once again, Adam Scott almost needs to be included. Per usual, Adam kept things sophisticatedly simple. The royal blue sweater with white pants is a crisp contrast. There’s not much to say here other than good job, Adam (and Uniqlo).

Sean: It’s frustrating that so many pro golfers look like they got dressed in the dark… when it’s really not that hard. You can look good without doing something out of the ordinary.

Harris English (Friday)

Isaiah: Harris English is one of the Tour’s most consistently best-dressed players. Like Adam Scott, English usually keeps things pretty simple with his attire from Onward Reserve. In round two, he wore a pink polo shirt with navy blue pants. Again, this is a very simple yet striking color combination. Harris English consistenly proves that good style doesn’t need to be complicated.

Sean: *Bernie Sanders voice* I am once again asking professional golfers to wear more pink.

James Nicholas (Thursday)

Isaiah: After Justin Thomas’ departure, Greyson found their newest face with James Nicholas. His scripting for round one completely embraced the U.S. element of the U.S. Open. Nicholas looked sharp in a red sweater, navy pants, and the Shadow Wolf Polo that I legitimately can’t tell whether it’s grey, light pink, or light blue. Either way, the ensemble looks very American and very cohesive. The red, white, and blue Jones hat really pull this together with a neat bow.

Sean: The hat is a huge standout for me here. The lettering matches the sweater perfectly. This is also a reminder of how prominent logos can be done tastefully. I’m super impressed, and I vote that this is my favorite look of the tournament so far.

The worst-dressed so far

Viktor Hovland (Friday)

Isaiah: All I can say is wow. Hovland’s round two outfit is the absolute worst attire I’ve ever seen on a golf course. Ever. He looked like Jack Skellington. I guess I give Hovland some credit because Shinnecock is close to the sea and he looked like he would have fit right in as a pirate. J. Lindberg should be absolutely embarrassed for putting him in this and Hovland should be equally embarrassed for saying yes. This is the equivalent of giving a toddler keys to a car, saying “Here kid, drive. I trust you,” and getting in the passenger seat.

Sean: I audibly gasped when I saw these pants. It genuinely looks like Hovland is wearing pajamas. Or maybe he’s in an old-timey jail. The black shoes and white pullover just complete the ridiculousness.

Brooks Koepka (Thursday)

Isaiah: I usually don’t hate what Koepka wears. However, the NIKE pink and white vertical striped polo looked awful. Koepka looked like a 70s drug dealer from Florida in this shirt.

Sean: Someone tweeted that this shirt looks like that Seinfeld episode where Jerry wears his suit inside out, and now I can’t unsee that. There are better bowling shirts than this atrocity. And the white belt is comically bad.

Jason Day (Thursday)

Isaiah: Jason Day is a lightning rod when it comes to his attire. Some is excellent and some is terrible. This is the latter. Black and grey camo with black and white GTH pants—really? Similar to Fleetwood’s excellent opening round look, when I saw Day’s outfit, I immediately texted the MyGolfSpy Group chat to lambaste him. Day’s unfortunate withdrawl at Shinnecock may be a blessing in disguise because if this was a precursor of his wardrobe for the rest of the tournament, it’s probably best that the world didn’t see it.

Sean: I usually back whatever outfit J. Day has on, but I can’t support these pants. Truly abhorrent.

J.J. Spaun (Thursday)

Isaiah: The decision to wear all white on a golf course is certainly a choice. The decision to wear all white on a sandy golf course on an extremely windy day is even more of a choice. Look, I like J.J. Spaun, but I don’t think that monochrome color blocking is the best choice. This outfit was terrible.

Sean: Shoutout to Rickie Fowler as he also did the all-white ensemble (but had neon shoes go to with it). Spaun looks like a little boy. This is a little boy outfit.

Keegan Bradley (Friday)

Isaiah: Keegan is usually a middle-of-the-pack dresser. However, I usually don’t care for his scripting. In round two, he wore a blue, white, and red striped polo with grey pants. It’s not the worst look ever but it just doesn’t look good. Paired with the Jordans, it just looked confused.

Sean: I’m not particularly offended by this one but I would like to ban Keegan from wearing red, white and blue after his total failure of a Ryder Cup captaincy.

Patrick Reed (Friday)

Isaiah: I’m not sure what Reed’s obession is with wearing all black. Maybe he likes looking like a villain; I seriously can’t tell. Either way, Reed looked hot, uninspired and boring.

Sean: I feel like Reed should be exempt from these lists in the future. He clearly just doesn’t care about his fashion. This is the outfit of a golfer who couldn’t possibly care less about his appearance.

Who else looked good/bad from the first two rounds of the U.S. Open? Let us know in the comments.
