What’s So Special About A Zero-Taper Putter Grip?

Putter grips are very personal. Once you find one you like, the rest of the putter grip world will have to literally pry it from your cold, dead hands.

Personally, I’m a pistol grip guy. I like ‘em skinny and I like ‘em not so skinny, but they’ve all been pistol. So why am I scratching my head with curiosity over the new Golf Pride Zero Taper putter grip?

Won’t you join me on this brief journey into self-therapy to find out why I all of a sudden have a wandering eye?

Golf Pride Zero Taper putter grip: What is it?

Well, the answer to that question is all in the name, isn’t it?

Zero-taper is literally that. The grip doesn’t taper. It’s parallel from top to bottom. The new Golf Pride Zero Taper grip shares a family tree with Golf Pride’s Reverse Taper grip. That one, too, does just what the name says it does. It’s thick at the bottom and gets skinnier toward the top. Sort of like a Super Stroke grip.

Well, exactly like a Super Stroke grip. But now it’s a niche that Golf Pride can play in, too.

The benefit of Zero Taper, according to Golf Pride, is to “optimize hand placement and encourage consistent grip pressure.”

Since those are things we all strive for, we can probably agree anything that helps us do that can’t possibly be a bad thing.

What’s more, Golf Pride says optimized hand placement and consistent grip pressure help square the putter face at impact.

That, too, is a good thing.

Zero Taper specifics

Golf Pride says the Zero Taper’s uniform geometric shape makes sure your top and bottom hands have the same feel on the grip. It says that leads to a more synchronized stroke, improved face awareness and maximum feedback.

Like the Reverse Taper, the new Zero Taper grips are made using polyurethane instead of rubber. The material is similar to what you’d find in Super Stroke putter grips although the Zero Taper grips feel a tad more pliable. It’s a soft, responsive feel that tells you if you’re gripping too tightly. If you didn’t know better, you’d swear it was pushing back, telling you to lighten up just a bit.

The new Zero Taper grip is the latest product to come from Golf Pride’s Global Innovation Center in Pinehurst, N.C. It sits adjacent to Pinehurst No. 8 and serves as Golf Pride’s global research, design and marketing headquarters.

Golf Pride Zero Taper putter grips are available in two sizes (medium and large) and with three accent colors (red, black, blue).

The new Zero Taper grips will be available at retailers and online starting on Feb. 17 for $34.99.
