Mike Maddux, one of the sport’s most renowned pitching coaches, will join the Los Angeles Angels’ coaching staff for the 2026 season, the team confirmed Friday.

Maddux, 64, had just completed his third season in his second stint with the Texas Rangers and will now join an Angels staff led by rookie manager Kurt Suzuki, who’s guaranteed only one year. The Rangers reportedly offered Maddux the opportunity to come back under new manager Skip Schumaker, but the two sides could not agree to terms on a new deal.

Maddux pitched 15 years in the major leagues and has served as a pitching coach for four different teams through these past 23 years, leading staffs for the Milwaukee Brewers (2003 to 2008), Washington Nationals (2016 to 2017), St. Louis Cardinals (2018 to 2022) and Rangers (2009 to 2015, then 2023 to 2025). His biggest influence came in Texas, where he won a championship in 2023 and was instrumental in the development of numerous pitchers.

Under Maddux, the Rangers boasted the best ERA in the majors in 2025. The Angels now hope he’ll do the same for a pitching staff that finished within the bottom five in ERA each of the past two years. The Angels employ several young, talented pitchers such as Jose Soriano, Reid Detmers, Cadan Dana and Jack Kochanowicz, all of whom need to take a big step forward if the organization hopes to snap a run of 10 consecutive losing seasons.
