Former UFC fighter Ben Askren has been released from the hospital two weeks after being readmitted due to an infection.
Askren’s life took a sudden turn in late May when he went to the hospital for what he thought was something minor. His condition was dire, suffering from a life threatening lung infection. He underwent a double lung transplant surgery and teetered between life and death. The 41 year-old does not remember anything from May 28 until July 2.
After 59 days he was released only to be back at the hospital six days later. The lifelong athlete suffered debilitating physical effects. He lost a considerable amount of weight in a short period of time and was initially unable to walk. “Funky” has made significant strides in regaining strength and mobility.
On Wednesday, Askren revealed through a social media post that he was out of the hospital. “Escaped again, hopefully this time it sticks,” he wrote.

In the days leading up to his second release from the hospital, Askren posted videos of himself exercising and showing his progress. Still frail, he’s put back on some weight and the paleness in his face has turned to a healthier hue.

Askren expected the road to recovery to be a bumpy one. On July 28, when he was readmitted to the hospital, he made a social media post captioned, “Not all sunshine and rainbows.’
“It wasn’t always going to be smooth. It wasn’t always going to be easy. It wasn’t always going to be all the way up. Hopefully this is just a small hiccup and I’m back home getting stronger again,” he wrote.
He is back home, and he is getting stronger.
