Malissa Sherwood, 50, a pioneer in women’s mixed martial arts, has passed away after a battle with Cancer. News of the former professional mixed martial arts competitor’s passing began circulating on social media earlier this week.
“The wrestling world lost one of its pioneers in women’s wrestling,” a post from Afsoon Roshan Johnston said on Facebook. “Malissa Sherwood was a fierce competitor and paved the way for many girls in the sport. We will honor her and she will be inducted into the California wrestling Hall of Fame on May 2. RIP Malissa.”
Former Invicta FC champion and UFC competitor Tonya Evinger also shared a post about her friend’s unfortunate passing.
“It’s a sad day today. Rest easy Malissa Sherwood, I hope you had a great ride. I will always love you 💔”
Malissa Sherwood held a pro MMA record of 3-2 and competed in the sport between the years of 2006 and 2010. She was a graduate of Missouri Valley College and Sierra College.
Sherwood’s wrestling experience dates back to 1995-2004 when she was as a member of the US National/ World Team/ Olympic Development Team.
She was an 8-time Senior US National Runner Up, 8-time Senior World Team Runner up, Pan American Champion in 1999 and Multiple University Championships and NAIA Champion.
She was the first female to receive a full scholarship to Missouri Valley College and was a member Of Dave Schultz Wrestling club.
