Retired Jon Jones issues statement after shocking UFC announcement: ‘New opportunities, challenges ahead’

“Bones” has spoken about his retirement.

Earlier today, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) CEO Dana White announced that Jon Jones had informed him that he has chosen to retire, which made interim UFC Heavyweight title holder Tom Aspinall the undisputed champion.

A few hours after the announcement, Jones has issued a statement on social media about his shocking official retirement.

“Today, I’m officially announcing my retirement from the UFC,” Jones wrote. “This decision comes after a lot of reflection, and I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the journey I’ve experienced over the years.”

“From the first time I stepped into the Octagon, my goal was to push the boundaries of what was possible in this sport. Becoming the youngest UFC champion in history, defending my title against some of the best fighters in the world, and sharing unforgettable moments with fans across the globe—these are memories I’ll cherish forever.”

“I’ve faced incredible highs and some tough lows, but every challenge has taught me something valuable and made me stronger, both as a fighter and as a person. I want to thank the UFC, Dana, Hunter, Lorenzo, God, my family, coaches, teammates, and all the fans who have stood by me through every chapter. Your unwavering support and belief in me have been my foundation.”

“To my fellow fighters, thank you for bringing out the best in me and for the respect we’ve shared inside and outside the cage. As I close this chapter of my life, I look forward to new opportunities and challenges ahead. MMA will always be a part of who I am, and I’m excited to see how I can continue to contribute to the sport and inspire others in new ways. Thank you all for being part of this incredible journey with me. The best is yet to come.”

Jones debuted in the UFC at age 21 in 2008 and, in just two years and seven months, claimed the UFC Light Heavyweight title by dominating Shogun Rua.

His 2011 campaign remains one of the most dominant in UFC history, with victories over Ryan Bader, Rua, Rampage Jackson, and Lyoto Machida.

“Bones” continued his reign, defeating Vitor Belfort, Chael Sonnen, Alexander Gustafsson, Glover Teixeira, and Daniel Cormier until he was stripped of the title for violating the UFC’s athlete conduct policy—a pivotal moment marking his off-cage struggles.

Jones reclaimed the Light Heavyweight title twice more, securing three total reigns and eleven successful defenses before vacating the belt following a controversial decision over Dominick Reyes.

After a three-year hiatus (February 2020–March 2023), he captured the UFC Heavyweight title against Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 (watch highlights).

His most recent and final fight was at UFC 309 in November 2024, where he defended his Heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic (watch highlights).

Over the next seven months, Jones engaged in psychological sparring with interim champion Tom Aspinall before confirming his retirement.

While his Heavyweight tenure may tarnish his legacy for some, Jones’ Light Heavyweight dominance remains unparalleled, setting an enduring benchmark for the division.
